1535100225<p> 4to full calf engraved letters at the start of each chapter 599 11pp. Piece missing from head of spine corners worn front hinge open text block somewhat loose in binding some signatures a bit loose missing front endpapers rear endpaper with corner tear 3 old signatures marked out on title along with some other notes or names text bright and clean. Petrus Gyllius 1490-1555 was a French naturalist who travelled the Mediteranean and the Orient and reported on the natural world. He was also a translator and this appears to represent a translation of a work by Claudius Aelianus 175AD-235AD. It has some very early descriptions of animals including elphants. However there are no illustrations. Â This is a somewhat rare work that appears to have surfaced only once or twice at auction in the past 25 years. The OCLC locates only a couple of copies of this edition. The work was originally published in 1533. OCLC.</p> Seb. Gryphium books
