"Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux" is an elaborate satire which pokes fun at contemporary public figures social mores and the political events of the day.<br /> <br /> Prolific French illustrator and caricaturist Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard 1803-1847 published under the pseudonym of Grandville. He was known for his series of satiric lithographs including "Les Métamorphoses du jour" and the "Voyage pour l'éternité." From 1830 until 1835 he was one of the main contributors to "La Caricature" and "Le Charivari." Later he moved from litography to wood-engraving. Chez MM. Circular with folds and some creasing; one broadside edge-chipped and with a few closed tears; very good.</p> <p>Three broadsides issued by Mahan Brothers’ Trained Animals of Charlton Massachusetts for three separate performances of trained animals at the 1897 Vermont and New Hampshire Inter-State Fair.</p> <p>The Mahans’ program of entertainment featured tricks performed five Patagonian Dogs—“only Dogs of this kind ever trained†“Sultan†the horse and “Swiss Oxen Champion Trick Cattle of the World.†The broadsides are accompanied by a circular letter from the Mahan Brothers touting the animals’ tricks and their association with the Orrin Brothers’ Circus in Mexico. None in in OCLC and likely unrecorded.</p> unknown

Story begins when Spunky the Shetland Pony is born in the Shetland Islands. He is sold to work in a coal mine then sent to America as a circus pony.
