His mentor literary plantation owner Joseph Addison Turner who published the newspaper The Countryman from his Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton Georgia managed to get Harris a deferment from service in the Confederate army something of an historical question mark/sore point in Harris life. He is most famous for his Uncle Remus stories which made him second only to his friend Mark Twain in popularity as an American writer at the turn of the 20th century. Harris died in 1908 a couple of years before Twain. This book of children s stories features 24 marvelous llustrations by the Anglo-American artist Oliver Herford 1863-1935.</p> Boston: Houghton Mifflin hardcover
