18355527Edinburgh:: WH Lizars 1835. First edition. Fine with original hand-coloring. A fine original hand-colored steel engraving with bright original hand-coloring. 6.75 x 4.25 inches 10.8 x 17.15 cm. This engraving is classified as one of the finest natural history miniatures produced during the mid-nineteenth century. A refined and intelligent work The Naturalist's Library was created for everyone with an interest in the natural world. Sir William Jardine 1800-1847 noted Scottish Ichthyologist and Ornithologist combined the talents of his colleagues; Edward Lear Prideaux John Selby William Swainson to contribute to The Naturalist's Library. The intention of the series was to create a fine yet affordable work describing and illustrating all elements of the natural world save botany. In addition several plates were engraved after noted artists: John James Audubon John Gould and Maria Sibylla Merian. The success of the publication was apparent by the production of forty subsequent volumes. The engraver of the work was William H. Lizars who at the time produced the first ten plates of John James Audubon's magnum opus the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. For The Naturalist's Library Lizars engraved the miniature plates in steel opposed to copper to render meticulously detailed settings for each described species. Traditionally only the major subject either bird animal insect or fish was individually painted with watercolor the background remained uncolored. This work has withstood the test of time and continues to be a fine and affordable option to the lavish engraved work of many natural history masters. WH Lizars, unknown

1937017276Manchester University Press 1937. Illustrated with eight plates octavo pp xiv 209 endpapers slightly marked otherwise very clean internally red cloth slightly dull and very slightly worn in a dustwrapper which is slightly worn frayed and age-toned. Deadly combat between gladiators is perhaps the best-known example of public entertainment offered in the Roman world. Wild and domesticated animals were also a part of these extravagant shows and the elaborate presentationor sometimes butcheryof creatures to gild an official's magnificence was among the most common forms of public diversion. Pitting bulls against bears lions against Christians and criminals elephants against rhinoceroses or parading large numbers of giraffe or zebras the games devised by the Romans ranged from astonishing to brutally cruel. It is now difficult to comprehend the pleasure that huge crowds took from the death or struggle of animals and people but the history of the role of animals in ancient Rome is both fascinating and important in view of modern sports spectacles and the enjoyment we take in animals in our daily lives. Based entirely on primary source material and infused with the author's direct experience with many of the animals discussed Animals for Show and Pleasure in Ancient Rome is a comprehensive investigation of the rise function and pageantry of wild and domesticated animals as household pets and as fodder for entertainment in the Roman world. Extending from Egypt through the Greek city-states to the magnificent coliseums of the golden age of Roman civilization Jennison provides an absorbing evocative and in-depth history that includes information about what animals were known to the Romans which creatures they liked best which animals were used as pets from what places they obtained animals and how much they cost how they were trapped and the architectural development and dispersion of arenas throughout the Roman world. The authoritative work on the subject. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Slightly Worn. Manchester University Press Hardcover

This is the story of the horse that came next the brilliant consistent Peter Pan whose hapless timing in 1932 meant he would never be remembered. Casting off the shadow of Phar Lap it is the tale of the wealthy gentleman owner the Hall of Fame trainer and the famous jockeys who guided Peter Pan to 23 rapturous victories between 1932 and 1936. Duodecimo 5 3/4" x 4 1/4" issued in original purple with red cloth spine and black lettering color pictorial to front cover. Illustrations by John Rea Neill. Early reprint. In 1904 Altemus published the first six books of a series of fairy tale books that would prove to be an extremely popular and a very long running series. "An entirely new series of books for children especially adapted for Christmas or birthday gifts" Altemus Catalogue 1904-1905. These books had three different formats. The first is the scarest while the third is more common. As time went on Altemus discontinued most of its other fairy tale books to concentrate on this group of books. New books were added year and spin-off series combined into one large umbrella listing. Later after Henry Altemus went out of business Platt and Munk reprinted many of the books. This work is from the format III series. The earliest format III books 1918-21 had blank endpapers. In about 1922-1923 the endpapers appeared green illustrating a group of fairy tale creatures dancing around a circle. Between 1923 and 1926 the endpapers were blue. In about 1926 the color changed to grayish. In 1931-2 the endpapers became brightly multicolored. This continued until 1933. The end papers in this edition are green. The listing of ads is through The Little Puppy that Wanted to Know Too Much Henry Altemus Company John Rea Neill was a magazine and children's book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz including L.
