1882020110Gand Ghent 1882. Print. Very Good. Unframed. Size approx. 18 x 27cm. A complete part for September 1882 including two impressive and vibrant original colour antique prints plates 461and 462 chromolithographed by P. De Pannemaeker. One is a magnificent quadruple folding plate of Sonerilae varieties 56 x 37cm; pl. 462 - this print was originally issued in the following part as it was not ready in time but it is included here as the accompanying text is in this issue; the other colour plate of the orchid Aerides japonicum is single size 18 x 27cm; pl. 461. The b/w engraved plate 463 is of Ixora splendida. These lithographic prints were printed in colour from multiple stones and often finished by hand - the quality of the lithography is exceedingly high producing rich strong colours. They were published in Belgium for one of the most important and sumptuous of all nineteenth century European horticultural journals - L'ILLUSTRATION HORTICOLE which was issued in monthly parts sometimes more frequently with plates and accompanying text in French and loosely bound in printed paper wrappers. The prints are all in very good condition bright and fresh with light creases to the lower corners but not affecting or detracting from the printed image; text pages very good; wrappers very good with minimal wear. A very good copy. L'Illustration Horticole was published in its entirety over 43 years. Between the years 1854-1868 it was edited by Charles Lemaire and published by Ambroise Verschaffelt in Ghent. In 1869 it was purchased and edited by by Jean J. Linden. The periodical finally came to an end in 1896. Please Note: we do not break good books for plates. Our plates have either been purchased loose or have come from books/monthly parts that are so defective or incomplete that they are irreparable. unknown
