Two important French revolutionary agricultural guides bound together in one volume. 319 pp plus allegorical frontispiece engraving of Cincinnatus by Halbou after Le Barbier; 161 pp. Both works are printed on very fine laid paper. ***The first work is the first edition of Romme's "Annuaire de Cultivateur", with contributions by many notable citizens, including Lamarck. It is a kind of encyclopedia of agricultural knowledge in the form of an almanac based on the French revolutionary calendar, substituting the names of plants and animals for the saints. There are many printings dating from 1795; this is the most complete, and features a charming engraved frontispiece. ***The second work, on fertilization of land, had first appeared in 1773 (69 pp). This 1796 edition is the second and last, and is much improved and expanded. *** 8vo. Bound in calf-backed boards (lightly worn and very sound). Internally FINE AND BRIGHT. Both works are important, and early editions are rare.

In -4°, 3 voll. "The content of the volumes, one of the earliest works of systematic zoology published in Britain, is based on the writings of earlier zoologists, information obtained by Pennant from his scientific correspondents all over Europe and America, and his studies in private museums and collections. It is embellished with engravings of animals, birds, landscapes and artefacts. Volume 2 deals with land and water birds, including some, such as the passenger pigeon, which are now extinct." (Cambridge University Press, 2014) “The work, which must be regarded as the most prominent of Pennant’s works, was originally planned as a sketch of the zoology of North America, but was later enlarged with the addition of descriptions of the quadrupeds and birds of the parts of Europe and Asia lying north of latitude 60 degrees N” (Anker 397)

Hardcovers with dusjackets, slipcase, ENGLISH, 1112 pages. fine condition ! Illustrated. ISBN 9780300111279. This is the first book to bring together the recorded works of the English artist Aubrey Beardsley. Despite his early death from tuberculosis in 1898, at the age of 25, these amount to nearly 1100 completed works of art (plus many related sketches) as well as more than 100 sketches in his letters and the books he owned, and this book includes over 50 that have never previously been published. In his brief career Beardsley made a defining contribution to Art Nouveau in Britain and abroad. He also influenced the early history of modern art, attracting the attention of the young Picasso, for example. His distinctive and innovatory graphic style, combined with highly provocative, often sexual subject matter, outraged critics and led to a period of intense notoriety. Beardsley's drawings span the grotesque, the delicately beautiful, the subtly erotic, and the frankly bawdy, and challenged the moral norms of Victorian society. They enthralled artists and art lovers the world over and continue to enthral today. Linda Gertner Zatlin's text presents Beardsley's drawings with a full record of their making, provenance, exhibition history and references in the art historical literature. This material record is accompanied by often extensive discussions of their themes, motifs and symbolism, as well as their critical reception. Unprecedented in its scope and thoroughness, this study presents Beardsley's work and explores its meanings more comprehensively than any previous work on him; it is likely to remain definitive. This superbly illustrated two volume catalogue, beautifully presented as a boxed set, is both an essential reference for specialists and an accessible and enchanting delight for Beardsley enthusiasts.
