Spine has 5 raised bands and is quite scuffed and worn, with chipping to to spine head. Board edges are worn, with a tear to leather at rear near spine edges, scores and light marks to front and rear. Corners are bumped. Bookplate at rear pastedown and hinge breaks at both endpapers. Some light foxing throughout and a few page corners are creased. Front pastedown inscribed in pen with a kitchen garden planting design for a family of 7, dated 1757. Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was an Irish novelist, playwright and poet, who is best known for his novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (1766), his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village' (1770), and his plays 'The Good-Natur'd Man' (1768) and 'She Stoops to Conquer' (1771). He is thought to have also written the classic children's tale 'The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes' (1765). First published in 1774 'A History of the Earth and Animated Nature' was also extremely popular. This Philadelphia 1845 edition is scarce and complete examples are rarely offered for sale. PAIMP20
