Undoubtedly a stirring story for readers of all ages written in striking proseand ably illustrated by C. Gifford Ambler who has so convincingly caught the sensitive mood of this fine animal story. Joseph Eugene Chipperfield 1912-1976 was a writer and worked as an editor and script writer of documentaries. He was brought up on a farm where he developed his love of countryside and animalsboth of which feature in all his books. He travelled around Europe making notes on wildlife and researched many of the locations of his books first hand.His novel Storm of Dancerwood is based on his experiences travelling the west country with his Alsation Max. As well as his horse stories he wrote many books about dogs which are probably considered his best worksalso other animalsusually in the wildsuch as eaglesfoxes and stags. His pony books were all about wild horses set in America. Christopher Gifford Amblerborn 1886worked as Christopher Ambler.Animal painter and illustrator.He drew in pen and ink pencil or brushoften with halftone washesin a boldcheerfully sketchy style.Recorded as having briefly illustrated the boys' paper Nelson Leein 1929.
