Since 1960, Limnoria tripunctata and Teredo navalis have been discovered, and are believed to be recent arrivals. The biology of these animals is reviewed. The various methods used to protect marine structures in the nineteenth century are mentioned. Reasons for premature failure are discussed in some details, and good handling and construction practices are recommended.
