ABOUT THIS BOOK: This text explains why everyone involved in horse management should understand the principles of correct foot balance and the repercussions of good bad and indifferent shoeing. Studies show that up to 95 per cent of all horses have some form of foot imbalance which will predispose them to injury. Common problems that can be attributed to faulty foot balance include: bad backs; bruised heels; hoof cracks; shortened stride/stumbling; arthritis; navicular disease/syndrome; chip fractures; sheared heels; and degenerative diseases. The book describes how good basic farriery particularly through paying attention to foot balance can be used to maintain and even enhance performance and soundness in the horse. It explains how to check the horse's medio-lateral balance with the aid of a T-square as well as how to assess the hoof/pastern axis and what to look for when picking up the foot. A fine original hand-colored steel engraving with bright original hand-coloring. 6.75 x 4.25 inches 10.8 x 17.15 cm. This engraving is classified as one of the finest natural history miniatures produced during the mid-nineteenth century. A refined and intelligent work The Naturalist's Library was created for everyone with an interest in the natural world. Sir William Jardine 1800-1847 noted Scottish Ichthyologist and Ornithologist combined the talents of his colleagues; Edward Lear Prideaux John Selby William Swainson to contribute to The Naturalist's Library. The intention of the series was to create a fine yet affordable work describing and illustrating all elements of the natural world save botany. In addition several plates were engraved after noted artists: John James Audubon John Gould and Maria Sibylla Merian. The success of the publication was apparent by the production of forty subsequent volumes. The engraver of the work was William H. Lizars who at the time produced the first ten plates of John James Audubon's magnum opus the Double Elephant Folio Edition of The Birds of America. For The Naturalist's Library Lizars engraved the miniature plates in steel opposed to copper to render meticulously detailed settings for each described species. Traditionally only the major subject either bird animal insect or fish was individually painted with watercolor the background remained uncolored. Six volumes small octavo pp 588; 600 15; 584 10 uncut a few pages unopened a little age-toning and marking one gathering 347-350 in Volume IV detached and gatherings towards the rear of the volume becoming a bit weak and loose Volume VI has extra bis pages 343 - 354; very well illustrated with 197 engraved or wood engraved plates of which 31 are folding and 50 coloured plates of which 2 are folding and 1 folding table; bound in the original pink boards a bit worn chipped and marked original printed paper labels on the spines the upper cover of Volume V detached otherwise firm and tight a neat signature on each front endpaper. Apparently lacking one plate in Volume 1 Relative Sizes of the Planets though there is no sign of this ever having been bound in. There are several extra plates to those listed and our copy would seem to agree with the set at auction at Christie's in 2006 which contained 246 of 248 plates. A work of considerable charm and interest and despite some faults as mentioned a remarkable set in original unsophisticated state. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. His first book was this 6-volume work which was based on his obviously very comprehensive series of popular short lectures on everything from natural species to meteorites. First Edition. Boards. In 1773 the author a member of the Scots Brigade of the Netherlands volunteered for an expedition against the Cottica Rebels runaway slaves in Surinam. When he arrived most of the fighting was over and he devoted his time to writing the journals that form the basis of this narrative.
