The first book to be hand printed on Morris’s Kelmscott ‘Chaucer’ press by the Press of the Woolly Whale. One of ‘a modest number’ there were also 4 copies printed on vellum. Handset in the original English Caslon Old Face type and printed damp on Arnold Unbleached paper by George W. Van Vechten Jr. Pp. 20. 8vo. original quarter vellum over brown paper covered boards image of a printing press enclosed within a decorative border blind embossed to upper cover lettering in gilt to spine t.e.g others uncut. A very good copy.Originally printed by Morris on his Albion Press with an account of its travels following the closure of the Kelmscott Press in 1898 written by Melbert Cary who acquired it from the Aries Press in 1932 who in turn had got it from Frederic Goudy who had bought it from James Guthrie of the Pear Tree Press in the UK. Whale 1896-1957 born July 22 1896 Dudley England; died May 29 1957 Hollywood California; English actor set designer and then director; imported to Hollywood in 1930 to direct the screen version of his state success "Journey's End"; best remembered for his four stylish horror films "Frankenstein"; "The Old Dark House"; "The Invisible Man" and "The Bride of Frankenstein"; retired from film in early 1940's to pursue painting; drowned in his swimming pool under mysterious circumstances.</p>

An incredibly smart example for its age. An exciting novelisation of the 1920s Cantonese revolution in Hong Kong describing the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communists. The plot serves as a vehicle for French novelist Andre Malraux to discuss issues of colonialism and revolution which he opposes and favours respectively.Four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the original cloth binding. With the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart with fading to the spine and slightly to board edges. Minimal shelf wear. Dust wrapper is very smart indeed with sunning to the spine and minor edge wear. Small chip to the fly leaf joint and a couple minor marks to the wrap. Internally firmly bound. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest plays ever written about World War I following the plight of a British Army infantry company in 1918. <br /> <br /> Whale accompanied the play to America for the production advertised here which by late 1929 was being performed by 14 companies in English and 17 in other languages and he would go on to direct the 1930 film adaptation starring Colin Clive David Manners and Ian Maclaren.
