On the 3 title pages: By Madame D. The first edition of the first 2 volumes 1786-1787. Binding in full speckled blonde calf for the first 2 volumes in speckled blonde sheep for the supplement. Red morocco title and volume labels. Rubbing. Scuffing to boards. Good copies. The only work and novel by Marguerite Daubenton wife of the famous naturalist. The novel appears to be inspired by the Aethiopica of Heliodorus of Emesa. The story tells the life of Zélie her arrival in the Sumatra desert following a shipwreck and her life as a castaway her reunion with d'Ermancour the man she loves and whom she knew in Paris and the twenty or so years spent with him his servant and young Ninette daughter of her friend who died shortly after giving birth to her then their final return to Normandy. A book by Marcel Arland bears exactly the same title without knowing whether the latter is an adaptation of the former. Chez BelinDesenne hardcover

Tome I : 382 pages, vignette au titre, bandeau gravé, petit manque de papier au coin inférieur de la page de titre, quelques marques de brûlures à la cire, rares rousseurs ; tome II : 405 pages, vignette au titre, bandeau gravé, feuillets brunis. Seconde édition. "Zélie dans le Désert" raconte l'histoire de Zélie, une jeune femme passionnée par les grands espaces et la nature sauvage. Après avoir perdu ses parents dans un tragique accident, Zélie décide de s'isoler dans le désert pour retrouver la paix intérieure. Au fil de ses rencontres et de ses aventures, elle découvrira des aspects insoupçonnés de sa propre personnalité et de sa capacité à surmonter les épreuves de la vie. Roman d'aventures, "Zélie dans le désert" peut également être considéré comme un roman introspectif et sentimental, s'inscrivant pleinement dans la lignée des courants littéraires du 18ème siècle. Bon état intérieur et malgré les défauts de la reliure, bon exemplaire de cette seconde édition.
