Publisher description: A true eclectic in her personal life her professional pursuits and her creative expression Marie Zimmermann has proven an elusive character for historians. But her skill as a designer and prodigious output of extraordinary jewelry and metalwork in the early 20th century have routinely caught people by surprise. At its best Zimmermann's work is beguiling and exhilarating exploring a wide range of innovative approaches to pattern material and surface. The diversity of her oeuvre including work in gold silver bronze copper and iron is as astonishing as the boldness of the life she led. This book gathers for the first time the story of Zimmermann's life and work and puts a spotlight on one of the most singular makers of metalwork active in early-20th-century America. Essays by leading scholars in the decorative arts offer extensive new research on Zimmermann and her work while more than 500 gorgeous full-color images show the breadth and novelty of her design practice. -- with a bonus offer-- . Just 75 years into independence less than 40 years from the stygian blackness of pre-modernity and only a decade from what seemed to be an economic apocalypse Ireland has finally modernized. With a young population and economic growth rates the envy of the western world it should offer a model for all fledgling states to follow. In this unsentimental account of the recent history of his native country John Waters defines the nature of the ideology which fuelled the drive to modernization charts the progress of the policies which brought it to fruition and reveals how Ireland recreated itself culturally politically spiritually and economically as "Modern Ireland". 1910NL-02428
1910 R.J. Waters panoramic aerial photo of Fresno California.

The present photograph is a horizontal panoramic aerial view of downtown Fresno taken at the beginning of the 20th century from an elevation of approximately 1000 feet. The white-printed caption in the lower center of the photograph confirms both the place and elevation and identifies the maker as R. J. Waters Aerial Photograph Co.

The photograph depicts Fresno's urban core downtown. From our vantage point we look north across Fresno's railroad hub and into the town proper. A central landmark is the white rotunda or dome of the old Fresno County courthouse. Around it the streets are lined with residential housing and small businesses. Important foreground features include railroads and industry. Fresno was served by multiple railroads including the iconic Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads. The bottom half of the panorama is dominated by extensive trackage and a range of railroad-related buildings including warehouses freight houses train sheds and at least one passenger platform. On the right side of the panorama a large industrial area with warehouses workshops and multiple derricks sits in proximity to the tracks. Towards the middle of the image an underpass or bridge connects the two sides of the many parallel tracks. In unison these elements reflect downtown Fresno's status as a vital rail and freight hub at the time.

Beyond the rail yards we note the city's commercial core which appears as a dense cluster of low brick and masonry commercial blocks surrounding a tree-lined civic square situated slightly to the right of center. The orthogonal grid of streets is buzzing with vehicular traffic. At the north end of civic square is the splendid dome and colonnaded façade of the old Fresno County Courthouse which was built in 1875 and hailed as "the grandest and noblest edifice that has ever been planned and contemplated in this valley". After surveys revealed structural weaknesses in the building and a new courthouse had been constructed this California landmark was demolished in 1966. Today the spot is occupied by the aptly named Courthouse Park. Taking note of the infrastructure a major street extends between the courthouse and the railyards. This not only prompted new arrivals to approach the city center via this axis but also created the perspective of a town centered on the rule of law.

A cityscape reconfigured

During the 20th century transportation and industrial patterns in downtown Fresno underwent significant changes. Over time everything from passenger services and yard configurations to freight and production facilities moved away from the city center. The large freight depots were either moved or repurposed and new urban needs led to rail-adjacent streets altering their character in fundamental ways. This photograph captures a time when the rail yards still physically dominated the downtown zones of many California cities and towns.

Yet even though the urban fabric of Fresno has changed dramatically since this image was copyrighted in 1910 a number of visible historic structures still stand. A significant remnant of Fresno's days as a railway hub is the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot at Tulare and H Streets in downtown Fresno. This was completed in 1889 and was an unusual departure from the traditional Southern Pacific architectural style.

About a block to the left west of the old Courthouse the panorama includes another iconic Fresno landmark one that still survives to this day. The Old Fresno Water Tower was designed by George Washington Maher and was completed in late 1894. It ceased operation in 1963 but was maintained and has served as a visitors' center since 2001.

While time and modernization may have altered Fresno's urban landscape it remains a city defined by stunning natural beauty. Set in the lovely San Joaquin Valley Fresno is set against the spectacular profile of the Sierra Nevadas which run across the entirety of this panorama forming a distant and dramatic horizon.

Census

The Library of Congress holds this panorama both as an original gelatin silver print and as a digital reproduction LoC Call Number: PAN US GEOG – California no. 48; OCLC no. 451307781. It is listed as a copyright deposit dated July 5 1910.

Urban aerial photography in early 20th-century America

Aerial and panoramic views of towns and cities became popular documentary and commercial subjects in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as photographic technology and airborne platforms matured and merged. Early panoramic aerials were sometimes taken from tethered balloons or kites but by the early 1900s photographers and specialist companies such as R. J. Waters were producing high-resolution panoramic prints that stitched a wide field of view into a single long panorama suitable for display. The Library of Congress and other collections hold many such panoramas because they capture a combination of urban form transportation infrastructure and civic landmarks at a moment when American cities were undergoing rapid change.

Beyond novelty early aerial panoramas were also practical: they recorded rail and industrial layouts useful for planners and businesses showed street grids and property patterns for municipal records and captured iconic civic views e.g. of courthouses parks capitols etc. which cities used to promote themselves. The technical limitations film size lens coverage and platform stability encouraged the panoramic format. Multiple exposures or rotating-camera techniques were combined into long prints that emphasize the horizontal sweep of a city—precisely what we see in this Fresno image.

Cartographers:

Raper James R. J. Waters 1856–1937 was a commercial photographer active in California and Nevada whose studio produced a wide range of documentary and panoramic photographs around the turn of the 20th century. Waters opened a commercial studio in San Francisco in the 1890s and became especially known for panoramic city views and commercial photographic services. His photographs are held in significant collections including those of the Library of Congress the Getty and the Metropolitan Museum among others.

Aerial photos of urban landscapes were among the most common genres of images that R. J. Waters's studio produced in the late 1910s. These include multiple aerial and panoramic images of cities like San Francisco Oakland Fresno and Sacramento. These prints were often made in large sizes for display and municipal record-keeping and now form a valuable visual record of how California cities looked before the ubiquitous transformations of the mid-20th century.
R.J. 44708Los Angeles: New World Pictures 1987. Very good plus. Original revised second draft for the classic 1989 teen film starring Winona Ryder Christian Slater Shannen Doherty Lisanne Falk Kim Walker and Penelope Milford. One of the greatest high school movies ever made and one of the few really worthy Winona Ryder vehicles HEATHERS not only anticipated the more satirical edge of '90s teen movies to come it perhaps embodied better than even John Hughes the world-weary pose for which Gen X would become best known. From the great heights of his Edgar-winning first screenplay Waters later descended to the ignominy of HUDSON HAWK and "a little bit of friction" with Tim Burton - although as he later noted there is much to be said for a career in which one has "enough old Batman residual money I can live my own life and write original scripts." Subjected to several recent stage and screen adaptations the original HEATHERS still cuts like a knife and resists reduction to a period piece: like Shakespeare Waters wrote not for an age but for all time. Gracious to a fault the writer neither disdained nor disclaimed the musical or the ill-fated television show based on his iconic work; in fact he suggested a "Heathers On Ice" would be nice too "and I'm getting an opera vibe." Gen X canon. 11'' x 8.5''. Original brad-bound white printed production wrappers. Title page dated November 17 1987. 110 leaves printed rectos only. Light toning and touches of soil to wrappers. 0317701986-1987. A collection of letters from Waters mostly to his literary agent Joan Daves as well as related ancillary materials showing Waters at work in the after-market for his writing with opportunities for later editions and film versions. Waters wrote primarily about the American Southwest in particular the Native American experience. His father was part Cheyenne. The first typed letter signed is from Waters to his agent Joan Daves dated August 24 1986 and concerns Lesley Ann Warren's interest in optioning the film rights to The Woman at Otowi Crossing and the contract for publication of a hardcover illustrated edition of The Man Who Killed the Deer. It is stapled to a copy of the contract with numerous marginal corrections and a retained copy of Daves' reply agreeing with Waters that the intended publisher Gibbs Smith had overreached in the contract. An included exchange between Daves and Gibbs Smith posits a simpler agreement while a retained carbon shows Daves reaching out to Ohio University Press to confirm they had no claim to hardcover rights. The second typed letter signed is from Waters to Keith Sabin in Daves' absence and is dated September 29 1986 and describes the purchasing history of Flight from Fiesta and the current unwelcome "blitz" he Waters is undergoing from Ritz Productions regarding theatrical rights. Waters encloses an initialed copy of the letter he wrote to Ritz Productions redirecting their overtures to Daves upon her return from Europe. Both of these letters are stapled together with retained copies of both Sabin's and Daves' replies as well as a retained copy of an earlier letter from Sabin to Waters saying they had been approached by Ritz and the initial contact letter from Ritz with an unsigned agreement for Right of First Refusal. Also included is a letter from Fiesta publisher Clark Kimball to Daves recommending the production company. The fourth typed letter signed from Waters to Daves dated April 29 1987 again describes the publishing history of Flight from Fiesta and informs Daves that the publisher Clark Kimball has been approached by CBS-Columbia regarding film rights and he includes Kimball's letter. Attached are the retained copies of letters from Daves to both Waters and Kimball admonishing all that Kimball has no role in film rights for the title and a later letter from Kimball acquiesces. The fifth typed letter signed from Waters to Daves August 3 1987 delineates an additional inquiry regarding a film option for Flight from Fiesta and several leads on optioning The Woman at Otowi Crossing should Lesley Ann Warren's option expire. Waters takes Daves to task for not responding to offers already presented for not keeping him informed and for being about to depart for Europe leaving him without representation: "I don't like to end our agent-client relationship after so many years but if the overload of work at this crucial time is too much for you I don't see any alternative." A copy of a letter to Waters at about this point from Alton Walpole shows one of the interested parties facing obstacles bringing Otowi Crossing to the screen. Also a letter to Daves from The University of Nevada thanks Daves for sending financials on Ohio University Press's Frank Waters: A Retrospective Anthology included but bemoans how infrequent the agent's communiques have become. However the Daves-Waters agent-client relationship was ongoing in October: in the sixth typed letter signed in this archive Waters informs Daves of yet another inquiry for Flight from Fiesta and asks her advice about payment on an opportunity he has to write the text for a book of photographs to be published by Arizona Highways likely Eternal Desert published in 1990. As mentioned many of the letters are stapled; most are folded for mailing; in some instances they bear the agency's routing marks or highlighting. The lot as a whole is near fine. No Binding. Near Fine. unknown
