The reviewer for the New York Times claimed it was "the first modern realistic novel . to deal with one of the fantastic true stories of American expansion one which is a legend in his family." Fewkes born in Newton Massachusetts was an anthropologist archaeologist and graduate of Harvard University. Spine faded. 1905 Hard Cover. xii 132 8 pp. Cloth spine and corners decorated paper over boards matching decorated endpapers. 1905 reissue of the 1647 fourth edition with facsimiles of title page preface and head-lines and the exact text and an essay Nathaniel Ward and The Simple Cobler by Thomas Franklin Waters. Ward is most well-known as a Puritan clergyman and pamphleteer and the author of the first set of laws adopted in New England The Body of Liberties 1641 which many credit as an influence on the United States Constitution. A textbook only sold by subscription that seeks to teach the reader arithmetic and world geography by using verse often rhyming verse to help the reader memorize the important terms and formulas. For example in describing the divisions of land the following poem is used: "Of land and its divisions read the stories; Peninsulas Continents Islands Promontories And Isthmuses and Capes and Mountains high Volcanoes Shores and Deserts wet and dry." The book covers both the technically terms in geography meridians tropics latitude longitude etc. and all continents and countries of the world. Additionally they provided some historical and cultural information on the countries as well such as information on the construction of the Great Wall in China and that Holland is one of the most populous districts on the globe. Numerous black and white illustration accompany the text both in the form of maps and illustrations on the geographical and architectural wonders of each locality described. At the end of the book there are six pages of the "Rules of Arithmetic In Verse." Discussed in this section is everything from subtraction to multiplication and decimal fractions to compound interest. Front cover title: "The Poetical Geography with the Rules of Arithmetic in Verse." Inscribed on front cover and inside cover with "Henry Alcott Anthony Rd." 80 pages. Yellow illustrated covers. A couple of internal closed tears some foxing couple of illustrations with light amateur coloring. A fair copy. A rhyming guide to world geography remarkable for its coverage of California. Page 4 has two views of San Francisco and pages 73 to 74 are devoted to California as well. On page 74 is a woodcut map of the gold regions entitled "Valleys of the Sacramento and San Joaquin. Engraved for the Poetical Geography. Wightman Buffalo N.Y." The map shows the area from San Francisco Bay east to the Sierra and from San Jose to the Feather River with the subsidiary streams well delineated. While not the most detailed of maps it is considerably more so than many listed in Wheat. Not in any of the relevant bibliographies. unknown books
