191720309Melbourne: Austral Music Publishing Co 1917. Musical score to celebrate returning World War I soldiers the words written by Sergeant W. Darwin 7th Battalion 1st Australian Division and music by Ambrose G. Gregory. The printed subhead at the front wrapper of the score continues "Returned Soldiers' Song Dedicated to the brave Australian and New Zealanders who fell at Gallipoli and to those living victorious".<br /> <br /> William Darwin born in Bendigo in 1895 d 1981 was a drum major for highland pipe bands from an early age. He enlisted in 1914 as a member of the Bendigo Volunteers and joined the 7th Battalion which sailed for Egypt where he was nominated as stretcher bearer. He sailed on the Galeka from Alexandria to Lemnos in preparation for the landing in Gallipoli. He served at Achi Baba Cape Hellas was promoted to Acting Sergeant and was wounded in September 1915. Darwin was later transferred to hospitals in England and Scotland and was diagnosed as suffering from shell shock by the Australian Medical Board in 1916. In 1917 back in Australia he settled in Carlton became Chief of the Carlton Caledonian Society and wrote the words to this highly popular march. While continuing to compose Darwin began a career as a lecturer speaking on a variety of topics and earning himself the nickname in the British press of "the Australian Orator". Starting in the 1920s he began organizing domestic and international tours for the Australian Pipe Bands.<br /> <br /> The score includes additional songs: 'There's a Sunny Land Australia' written and composed by C. Vaude; and 'Lonesome Jes' Lonesome for You' by Hal L. Campbell. <br /> <br /> Small folio 7pp. With a b&w printed photographic portrait of Darwin at the front cover text printed in black. Inscribed to Cuban-born poet playwright and professor Robert Lima from Alegria and we think Flakoll -- the signature is hard to decipher. Lima specialized partly in Latin American literature and edited and translated the first critical book on Borges to appear in English in 1965 so a nice association copy. The anthology introduces to the American public some of the greatest writers of the pre-Boom and Boom-era authors: Ernest Cardenal Juan Rulfo Octavio Paz Jose Donoso Nicanor Parra Hugo Lindo Julio Cortazar and many more. The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the book written by Charles Darwin and published in 1839 as his Journal and Remarks bringing him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as Darwin's Journal of Researches and the revised second edition published in 1845 used this title. A republication of the book in 1905 introduced the title The Voyage of the "Beagle" by which it is now best known.<br /> This copy is good minus in the publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles on the spine and black blind-stamped title and design on the covers. Moderate wear scuffing and spotting on both covers. The front hinge is cracked and the rear hinge is starting but binding is still holding. A couple of pages have come loose. The endpapers and deckled page edges are age darkened but the text itself is clean. Slight foxing on plates. CH. John Murray hardcover

Best wishes Darwin Hecht M.D." Also laid in is a slip of paper in the doctor's hand which says "will welcome comment" along with a facsimile copy of a newspaper article from the NY Amsterdam News Sat. Mar. 4 1967 with a picture of Dr. Hecht and is titled "50 Years A Doctor; Receives Citation". The inscription recipient is possibly that of Dr. Sidney Milton Edelstein who was the founder of the Dexter Chemical Corporation in the Bronx New York City. Per a biography of Dr. Edelstein by Prof. Zvi C. Koren he was "a research chemist inventor industrialist historian and bibliophile." The common interests professions New York residence and Dr. Edelstein's achievements and passion for books may indicate this could have been the reason for the laid in paper slip inviting "will welcome comment." Bound in light blue publisher's cloth with silver foil lettering on the cover and spine. Frontispiece is a black and white portrait of Dr. Hecht. 250 pp. Light blue dust jacket with black lettering on the cover and spine. <br><br>CONDITION: Both book and DJ are VG with light wear. Book's hinges are strong and binding is sound. Unmarked except for the author's inscription on the front flyleaf. Dust jacket shows some soiling and wear but is NOT price clipped.
