About The Book : In considering the Origin of Species it is quite conceivable that naturalist reflecting on the mutual affinities of organic beings on their embryological relations their geographical distribution geological succession and other such facts might come to the con- clusion that species had not been independently created but had descended like varieties from other species. Nevertheless such a conclusion even if well founded would be unsatisfactory until it could be shown how the innumerable species inhabiting this world have been modified so as to acquire that perfection of structure and coadaptation which justly excites our admiration. Naturalists continually refer to external conditions such as climate food &c. as the only possible cause of variation. In one limited sense as we shall hereafter see this may be true; but it is preposterous to attribute to mere external conditions the structure for instance of the woodpecker with its feet tail beak and tongue so admirably adapted to catch insects under the bark of trees. About The Author : Charles Robert Darwin FRS FRGS FLS FZS 1809 �1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. His proposition that all species of life have descended from common ancestors is now widely accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process that he called natural selection in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and he was honoured by burial in Westminster Abbey. Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species. By the 1870s the scientific community and a majority of the educated public had accepted evolution as a fact.
