One of the most important voyages of the 19th century this is where Darwin made the observations that led to his theory of evolution by means of natural selection which emerged two decades later. The Voyage of the Beagle 1840-43 has delighted and enlightened millions because of Darwin's loving and insightful observations of the plants animals people and locations he explored. These journals provide striking examples of the great scientist's reasoning ability and intriguing glimpses into his thought processes. They are the precursor to The Descent of Man 1871 1874 a controversial leap in evolutionary theory from nature to humanity.
Prometheus hardcover

In this revised edition of his seminal work readers will delve into the compelling arguments that demonstrate how human behaviors and emotional responses are deeply rooted in our animal ancestry. Darwin meticulously presents evidence from both behavioral and physical traits illustrating that our unique capacities are not as distinct from the animal kingdom as once thought. By examining these connections students and scholars will gain valuable insights into the evolutionary processes that have shaped humanity.

The second part of the book provides an in-depth analysis of sexual selection across various species highlighting how many traits develop not merely for survival but also for reproductive advantage. This aspect of Darwin's theory has laid the groundwork for ongoing research in biology psychology and anthropology making it essential reading for anyone interested in the complexities of evolution. With an insightful introduction by Professors Bonner and May this edition contextualizes Darwin's ideas within both historical and contemporary frameworks making it a must-have for those seeking to understand the intricacies of human nature and behavior.
Princeton University Press hardcover
