Internally fine and clean. 4 1-165

Rare first appearance in Serbo-Croatian of Darwin's 'Journal of Researches' - being the only work of any of Darwin's translated into this language. The present translation was never completed thus only the first part 1. The full translation was not made until 1949.In 1945 the decision to recognize Croatian and Serbian as separate languages was reversed in favor of a single Serbo-Croatian or Croato-Serbian language. Today for political/nationalistic reasons there is a general opposition to the concept of Serbo-Croatian as a common pool/family. "On its first appearance in its own right also in 1839 it was called Journal of researches into the geology and natural history etc. The second edition of 1845 transposes 'geology' and 'natural history' to read Journal of researches into the natural history and geology etc. and the spine title is Naturalist's voyage. The final definitive text of 1860 has the same wording on the title page but the spine readsNaturalist's voyage round the world and the fourteenth thousand of 1879 places A naturalist's voyage on the title page. The voyage of the Beagle first appears as a title in the Harmsworth Library edition of 1905. It is a bad title: she was only a floating home for Darwin on which in spite of good companionship he was cramped and miserably sea-sick; whilst the book is almost entirely about his expeditions on land." He examines his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle and subsequent preparation of a manuscript for his pivotal work ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES 1859. Also included are many of Darwin's important letters edited by his son Francis. They reveal the freethinking geobiologist's thoughts on religious beliefs scientific research and the bitter controversy surrounding the far-reaching ramifications of evolutionary theory for life on Earth including our own species. 1948LCB60910Beograd: Prosveta. Izdavacko Preduzece Srbije. 1948. 1st Bosnian Edition. Original Quarter Cloth with Printed Boards. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. With plate & folding genealogical table. Lacks errata slip. Pages yellowed as normal for age. Covers slightly worn & somewhat stained to top right hand corner back cover. Some foxing on front cover. ; GPTThe 1948 Bosnian edition of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" titled "Postanak vrsta pomocu prirodnog odabiranja ili Održavanje povladivanih rasa u borbi za život" marks a significant historical and cultural milestone as the first translation of this seminal work into Bosnian. This rare edition not only made Darwin's revolutionary ideas on evolution and natural selection accessible to a new audience but also did so in a period marked by post-war reconstruction and ideological shifts in the region. The translation encompasses Darwin’s original theories which propose that species evolve over time through natural selection where traits beneficial for survival and reproduction are preserved leading to gradual changes in the species. This Bosnian version is collectible not only because of its historical value but also due to its rarity and the context of its publication. Released shortly after World War II it reflects the era's hunger for scientific knowledge and the intellectual rebuilding that was taking place across Europe. As a collectible it holds immense value for historians collectors and scholars interested in the dissemination of scientific thought across different languages and cultures. This edition serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Darwin's work and the global appetite for scientific advancement bridging language barriers and cultural divides. 190152738London: Jarrold & Sons 1901. First printing. Near fine. First edition advance review copy of this scarce turn-of-the-century primer on Darwinism for "every day people." A popular introduction to evolution by means of natural selection for "the young person the person with little education the person who is not studious the masses in short." Influenced by renowned naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace with whom he became acquainted due to their mutual work in land nationalization projects Ogilvy turned his attention to the still widely misunderstood concept of evolution. Wallace who had already provided the introduction for Ogilvy's THE THIRD FACTOR OF PRODUCTION also reviewed the manuscript for this book. Certainly with his connection to Darwin as "a co-discoverer and friend" he was one of the best possible beta readers for such a text.

Ogilvy stresses that this book was written to make the principles of Darwinism accessible to all by making the subject "simple clear and interesting" and avoiding "technicalities and dry structural details" - addressing what he felt was a general misunderstanding of Darwin's findings amongst the population he sought to reach. A contemporary review in the science journal NATURE confirms this referring to a "widespread . ignorance and misapprehension of Darwin's teaching among the general public." Another from THE EXPOSITORY TIMES praises the "blessed simplicity in Mr. Ogilvy's way of presenting the subject."

Laid into this copy is a typed letter signed by the publisher sending it to a journal editor for review. OCLC locates only a handful of US holdings and only a few more elsewhere. A gorgeous copy. 7.25'' x 4.75''. Original green cloth with dark green stamped Art-Nouveau design lettered in red to front board and in gilt to spine. Pictorial endpapers. 160 pages. 1908191094London: printed for the Linnean Society 1908. Marking fifty years of evolutionary theory First and only edition of this commemorative volume in the strikingly gilt-stamped original cloth. It celebrates the proposal of the theory of evolution described in the words of the Linnean Society's then president Dukinfield Henry Scott as "without doubt the greatest event in the history of our Society since its foundation" p. 1. The grand event marked the fiftieth anniversary of the presentation of Darwin and Wallace's papers on natural selection first read to the society in 1858 by Charles Lyell and Joseph Hooker. Both papers are here reprinted in full alongside the event programme the list of attendees of the celebratory dinner the general meeting minutes and summaries of the special lantern demonstrations delivered during the evening. Of particular interest is a detailed account of the objects exhibited in the library which comprised natural history specimens illustrating variation across species. The event took place at the Institution of Civil Engineers because the Society's rooms in Burlington House were not large enough to hold the number of scientists in attendance. Attendees also included members of the Darwin family representatives of scientific societies and several foreign ministers. Wallace was the first recipient of the Darwin-Wallace medal; six similarly influential evolutionary biologists - including Hooker Galton and Haeckel - received silver versions. It was also issued in wrappers. Octavo. Portrait frontispiece of Darwin 9 plates 7 of which portraits with corresponding facsimile signatures.
