Mm 140x210 Nel 1836 Charles Darwin ha ventisette anni ed è appena sbarcato dal Beagle; dopo cinque anni di navigazione intorno al mondo. Del lungo viaggio appena concluso gli rimangono appunti e osservazioni sparse, oltre a una raccolta di preziosi reperti naturalistici. Non ha ancora le idee chiare, ma è già un rinomato naturalista e geologo e nella sua mente sta prendendo corpo una sfocata intuizione riguardo alle modalità di "trasmutazione" delle specie. Comincia così a buttare giù appunti frammentari, a ruota libera, su alcuni piccoli taccuini. Ecco come inizia l'avventura intellettuale che lo porterà in pochi mesi a elaborare la teoria della selezione naturale. Editi in Inghilterra solo nel 1987, questi taccuini giovanili rivelano un profilo intellettuale di Darwin del tutto inedito, dalla sua sconcertante capacità di collegare idee lontane alla pioniera indifferenza verso i confini disciplinari e, soprattutto, all'irriverente atteggiamento di sfida verso le teorie dei maestri più blasonati dell'epoca. In queste pagine Darwin dimostra di avere piena consapevolezza della portata e delle inevitabili conseguenze delle sue scoperte, la cui pubblicazione ("The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" fu edito la prima volta a Londra nel novembre 1859), nella buona società anglicana dell'epoca equivaleva né più né meno che alla "confessione di un delitto". Quite apart from its scientific value, Darwin's first published work (1839) is an important travel work in its own right. This is essentially a re-issue of Murray's 1890 edition (Freeman 28) with the postscript incorporated in the text, but preserving the gilt 'rhea' hunt on upper board and gilt '3/6' on backstrip first seen in the 1889 edition (Freeman 21). With 32p publisher's catalogue (dated April 1886) bound in at end and the trade ticket of Beavis Stewart of Newcastle-on-Tyne on front paste-down. Quite apart from its scientific value, Darwin's first published text (1839) is an important travel work in its own right. The binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. The publisher's catalogue sometimes found at end has not been bound with this copy. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865).
