The first German translation of Darwin's "Origin of the Species" was published in 1860 by the same publisher. This edition is notable for the inclusion of an albumen frontispiece of Darwin a very early portrait. Van Wyhe's Complete Photographs of Darwin identifies this portrait as a sitting by Maull & Polyblank from 1857. This image is identified as a variant of that image "1.1. Albumen photograph 15.3x11.5cm uncropped mounted on thick paper. Below image "Phothogr. v. Buchner / Charles Darwin. / E. Schweitzerbart'sche Verlagshandlung in Stuttgart." Frontispiece to Origin 2d ed. in German 1863 F673." If not the first it was certainly among the first albumen images of Darwin to be published in a book. 18965553<p><strong>First edition of the significant Russian translation of 'On the Origin of Species' by Kliment Timiryazev.</strong></p><p>The first Russian translation of Darwin's '<em>On the Origin of Species</em>' was completed in 1864 based on the American edition of 1860 and heavily influenced by the first German translation 1860.</p><p>A second translation appeared in 1896 offered in two versions—one by journalist historian and mathematician Mikhail Filipov and the other by the renowned Russian botanist and physiologist Kliment Timiryazev 1843-1920 a prominent advocate for Darwin's theories in Russia. Both translations were based on Darwin's final 6th edition 1876.</p><p>This first volume of the four-volume series '<em>The Works</em>' by Darwin features Timiryazev's first translation. As a young student at the University of St. Petersburg in 1860 Timiryazev first encountered Darwin's theory of the origin of species. After graduating he traveled to Heidelberg for further study and research where he spent much of his time with Vladimir Kovalevsky a passionate Russian Darwinist. In 1877 Timiryazev after some difficulty managed to arrange a meeting with Charles Darwin at Down House. Upon returning to Russia Timiryazev devoted himself to defending and promoting Darwin's theories. Darwin's previous book On the Origin of Species had briefly mentioned evolutionary interactions between insects and the plants they fertilised and this new idea was explored in detail. Field studies and practical scientific investigations that were initially a recreation for Darwin-a relief from the drudgery of writing-developed into enjoyable and challenging experiments. Aided in his work by his family friends and a wide circle of correspondents across Britain and worldwide Darwin tapped into the contemporary vogue for growing exotic orchids.<br /> <p>The book was his first detailed demonstration of the power of natural selection and explained how complex ecological relationships resulted in the coevolution of orchids and insects. The view has been expressed that the book led directly or indirectly to all modern work on coevolution and the evolution of extreme specialisation. It influenced botanists and revived interest in the neglected idea that insects played a part in pollinating flowers. Very slight scuffing at the corners and very slight fraying at the spine ends. Three small bubbles in the cloth on the front cover.
