Dalla metà del XX secolo abbiamo prodotto una quantità di alluminio, circa 500 milioni di tonnellate, sufficiente per avvolgere tutti gli Stati Uniti nella carta stagnola. Eppure, sostiene Farrier, quanto più la crisi climatica ed ecologica ferisce l'umanità intera, tanto più dovrebbe spronarla a reagire: i nostri fossili futuri, gli oggetti di cui ci circondiamo ogni giorno, sono infatti la nostra eredità. Saranno loro a raccontare come abbiamo vissuto nel XXI secolo e sono loro, oggi, a fornirci l'opportunità di scegliere come saremo ricordati. Siamo abituati a leggere «il presente alla luce del passato, la sfida è cominciare invece a esaminare il nostro presente, e noi stessi, alla sinistra luce gettata dal futuro che avanza». Più impareremo a vedere il nuovo mondo promesso dalla nostra inazione, più saremo in grado di immaginare un'alternativa, per noi stessi e per chi verrà dopo di noi.

About The Author:- R. Rajeevan Professor in Political Science, NSS College, Nilamel, Kerala.
