The first German edition classic text on corals, the original having been published at London in 1755. This expanded edition contains an additional 8 plates not found in the first edition. "Ellis in 1754 had persuaded Ehret, the great botanical artist, to accompany him to Brighton 'there to draw from Nature, whatever the Microscope presented him of those extraordinary Beings'. The book duly contains delicate engravings from these drawings."?Knight. Knight, Zoological Illustration. p. 103.
8vo., First Edition thus, with 49 plates on 16, several maps and charts in the text and endpaper maps; handsomely bound in full dark green crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, an elegant copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The standard account from the Japanese perspective and a classic of WWII. One of the foremost figures in the IJNAF, Mitsuo Fuchida was strike force commander at Pearl Harbor. Unable to take part in operations at Midway due to a recent appendix operation he watched the action from the deck of the flagship, taking notes as events unfolded. Subsequently, he was one of the few Japanese naval officers permitted to study the reports of the battle and is therefore uniquely qualified to deliver this account. For the first US edition (published for USNI) the Japanese original was translated into English by Commander Chihaya and edited by Kawakami and Pineau; their text is repeated here. Importantly, the Japanese photographs (although of poorer quality) are retained, and supplemented by a small number of well-chosen USN pictures. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Presents three simultaneous one-man exhibitions of Cuevas' works displayed at Schweyer-Galdo, Meeting Point and Tasende Galleries. These exhibitions were "conceived with the purpose of presenting as complete an image as possible of the artist's inquietude and of his iconography, in cities where he was not well known. The exhibition at Schweyer-Galdo Galleries in Birmingham, Michigan, shows Cuevas' oeuvre from 1965 to the present. It gives an idea of the artist's trajectory during fifteen years of fertile production, and summarizes, without simplifications, the images and human miseries which obsess Cuevas. Most of the works in this retrospective show are part of a collection selected by the artist and previously exhibitied in museums thoughout the United States, South America and Europe for the past four years. The exhibitions in Coral Gables and La Jolla comprise some of Cuevas' latest works, created during his many sojourns in Europe. Cuevas and I have selected these works together." - Jose M. Tasende.
