At a time when many ailments of the mind were treated with soothing baths or dangerous electroshock therapy Freud initiated a novel practice: he simply listened to his patients. He called his method of treatment psychoanalysis or the talking cure. Though the validity of Freuds theories is still widely debated there is little doubt that his contributions to the study of the mind were invaluable. In this compelling even-handed biography Catherine Reef explains Freuds groundbreaking theories and methods and shows how Freudian thought has affected our culture changing the way we think about everything from art and literature to raising children. Beautiful archival family photographs round out this intimate look at a fascinating man. 202086803Boston: Clarion Books Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2020. First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Ellen Duda Jacket art and Lettering. 10 179 3 pages. Illustrations. Author's Note. Notes. Bibliography. Sarah Bernhardt: A Timeline. Index. Signed by the author on the title page. Catherine Reef is a nonfiction writer whose biographies social histories health books and descriptions of famous buildings and monuments both inform and entertain readers. Notable among her biographical subjects are the actress Sarah Bernhardt writers such as E.E. Cummings John Steinbeck and Walt Whitman scientists such as Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud and outstanding African Americans from Colin Powell to the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. Addressing the spirit of place in America Reef has also written about such historical monuments as Monticello Mount Vernon and the Lincoln Memorial. Among her books of social history are those dealing with African Americans such as Africans in America: The Spread of People and Culture as well as several detailing the African-American military contribution including Buffalo Soldiers and Civil War Soldiers. From Wikipedia: Sarah Bernhardt born Henriette-Rosine Bernard; 22 October 1844 - 26 March 1923 was a French stage actress who starred in some of the more popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries including La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas fils; Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo Fédora and La Tosca by Victorien Sardou and L'Aiglon by Edmond Rostand. She also played male roles including Shakespeare's Hamlet. Rostand called her "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture" and Hugo praised her "golden voice". She made several theatrical tours around the world and she was one of the early prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures. She is also linked with the success of artist Alphonse Mucha whose work she helped to publicize. Mucha became one of the more sought-after artists of this period for his Art Nouveau style. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: Much of what is known about this legendary French actress 1844-1923 is recognized as colorful hearsay—which was fomented by Bernhardt herself. In this concise well-researched biography Reef faithfully separates the documented from the speculative in tracing Bernhardt's life from her birth as the daughter of a Jewish courtesan to the three days when "life in Paris halted" to mourn the death of the "Divine Sarah." After education at boarding school and a convent where she was baptized into Catholicism and yearned to become a nun the temperamental 15-year-old was reluctantly admitted to study drama at the Comédie-Française. Headstrong and tempestuous she was initially an unremarkable actress with an erratic career; by the time she was 24 however she had become "the star everyone wanted to see" mesmerizing audiences around the globe. Reef details Bernhardt's wide-ranging career acts of patriotism during the Franco-Prussian War and WWI and intriguing personal life including idiosyncrasies such as sleeping in a coffin. Well-recounted rendering the drama of Bernhardt's magnetic performances and extraordinary charisma this is a solid introduction to an unconventional feminist and international idol.
