Fine Turkish Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. [6], 711, [Lix] p., plates. Slight stains on spine. A fine copy. First and only Turkish edition with bilingual title and foreword with English (pp. I-XVI), of this rare book published after the first description of the Black Sea fishes has been performed by Pallas in 1811, containing the most complete information about the species composition of fishes in the Black Sea is given by Slastenenko (1955-1956), who listed 237 species, with characteristic features species, its distribution, biology, ecology, taxonomy, commercial and nutritional significance, conservation status with attractive plates. "This is the book of knowledge acquired through research carried on since three-quarters of a century in the neighboring countries bordering the Black Sea." (From the Preface by Ekrem Barlas). "This manuscript gives for the first time, a general summary of the marine and freshwater fishes in the Black Sea Basin. In the last century, a series of documents on the fauna of the Aral-Pontic, Caspian Basin has been published by K. Kessler and other authors. But, Since then, several investigations on the fauna of fishes of the Black Sea Basin made by individuals and expeditions revealed the existence of entirely different conditions. Therefore some deceased species have been described. Furthermore, as a result of the migration of the Mediterranean fauna into the Black Sea, the lists have become richer with the addition of many species which were unknown earlier. This book consists of two sections: 1. Special section which deals with the study of the composition of the fish fauna, and its systematic and biological characteristics. 2. The section consists of a summary of the historical study of the Black Sea fauna, its genesis, and a short hydrological and geological history of the sea. In the special section, 237 species and subspecies have been described. These belong to 20 groups, 56 families, and 122 genera. This section also includes the emigrants of the Mediterranean, remnants of Pontic fossils, and freshwater forms." (From the Slastenenko's foreword). 2006BN39046Spektrum Akademischer Verlag 2006. Auflage: 2006 21. September 2006. Softcover. 239 x 172 x 24 cm. Chelicerata are a basically terrestrial group of invertebrates including many clades whose representatives have never found an evolutionary way to aquatic live. An exception is made by the spiders which include apart from the famous Argyroneta aquatica a considerable number of hygrophilous species and by the highly diverse aquatic mites which in inland water habitats are represented by members of numerous different clades having evolved an aquatic or amphibious lifestyle along various evolutionary pathways. For the first time in limnofaunistic bibliography the present taxonomic knowledge about these different groups of invertebrates is brought together in an overview for the Central-European fauna. This first volume includes taxonomic keys and ecological information concerning hygrophilous and aquatic spiders a general introduction to mites and the treatment of three mite groups generally known from terrestrial habitats Acaridida Oribatida terrestrial Parasitengona. Furthermore the freshwater-dwelling representatives of the originally marine Halacaridae are treated and the species-rich true freshwater mites Hydrachnidia are represented in a general introduction. Out of the latter group detailed taxonomic treatment and determination keys are presented for members of the superfamilies Stygothrombioidea Hydrovolzioidea Eylaoidea and Hydrachnoidea. Three further volumes are in preparation which will include the remaining four superfamilies of Hydrachnidia and the larval stages of all superfamilies. The chelicerata volumes of this series are a basic tool for all limnologists interested in diversity and ecology - in particular for biologists investigating the ecotones between ground- and surface water between benthos and plankton and between water and land. 1999BN28740Spektrum Akademischer Verlag 1999. 1999. Softcover. 24 x 17 x 1 cm. The subphylum Clitellata of the phylum Annelida contains several classes of organisms dwelling in freshwater systems. The systematic concepts of these groups are still a matter of discussion at all taxonomic levels involved. It is hoped that the interrelationships of systematic entities within and above the species level will be better understood as additional and more precise data on morphology anatomy and genetics become available. The aim of this volume is to present a compilation of valid tax described from the western Palaearctic area including the fauna of the Egyptian Nile in order to serve as a fundament for future work. This contribution covers three classes of leeches: the Branchiobdellida which live as epizoons on freshwater decapods the small class Acanthobdellea comprising highly specialised parasites living on freshwater fishes and finally the class Hirudinea which contains species commonly known as the "classical" leeches. Standardised descriptions of the morphology of all species are given. Whenever possible these are amended by data on anatomical details to allow correct identifications. Most of the species are illustrated many of them for the first time. The keys cover all taxa known from the geographical range under consideration. They are especially constructed to be used by biologists in the field thus enabling fast access to an unknown species without dissection. Whenever possible information on biology ecology and distribution is supplied although many of these data have to be used very carefully to avoid the hitherto known frequent misinterpretations.
