One of the great rarities of local natural history, printed on a home-made printing press at Llanrwst, Conway, Wales. John Jones (1786-1865), printer and inventor, "He kept a paper and bookshop, and printed much miscellaneous work for the locality. Sometime (? before 1817) he constructed three presses to the Ruthven design, so called after its inventor, Alexander Ruthven, which he then used for all his printing work. He also learnt to cast his own type and used many of his own letters and characters for the rest of his life."?(DWB). In 1936 the Science Museum acquired John Jones' press and equipment. Sehr seltene, erste deutsche Ausgabe dieses vielbeachteten englischen Werks über die Veredelung von Obst- und Forstbäumen und deren Schutz vor Schädlingen, ins Deutsche übertragen vom bedeutenden Aufklärer, Forschungsreisenden, Ethnologen, Übersetzer und Revolutionär Johann Georg Adam Forster, Teilnehmer an der zweiten Cook'schen Weltumseglung von 1772-75. – Inhalt: Der britische Botaniker William Forsyth, damals königlicher Obergärtner zu Kensington, behauptete in der vorliegenden Schrift eine Substanz entwickelt zu haben, die beschädigtes Baumholz nicht nur heile und es in weiterer Folge vor Schädlingen schütze, sondern dessen Verwendung auch wachstumsfördernde Wirkung habe. Das Interesse an Forsyths sogenannten „Plaister“ war groß, die Krone sicherte sich im Hinblick auf den steigenden Holzbedarf im Schiffsbau das Rezept, und Forsyths Buch erlebte allein bis 1824 sieben, meist mit Kupfern vermehrte Auflagen. Seine Mixtur bestand eigentlich aus Kuhfladen, Urin, Holzasche, Sand und Kalkstaub, welche Ingredienzien ihm von Fachkollegen den Vorwurf einbrachten, ein Schwindler zu sein. – Erhaltung: Titelblatt am Außensteg zur Stabilisierung, Einband stellenweise etwas berieben, insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieser kaum zu findenden Schrift. – Literatur: Wilpert-Gühring, 2.
