Walker (1881-1946) was the New York City politician known as Jimmy Walker. He entered politics after graduating from New York Law School, becoming a member of the Assembly (1909) and then of the State Senate (1914). Backed by Gov. Alfred E. Smith and Tammany Hall, he was elected mayor of New York, and served from 1925 to 1932. A popular figure known for his charm and wit but particularly for his enthusiastic participation in the high life typical of the era, he made improvements in sanitation, hospitals, and subways. He resigned in 1932 after being charged with corruption. Hardbound. Excellent twentieth century study of New York State wild flowers, with an interesting association to a colorful politician. THIS COPY WAS FORMERLY IN THE LIBRARY OF SIR FRANCIS TUDSBERY AT CHAMPFLEURIE AND BEARS HIS FINE NINETEENTH-CENTURY ENGRAVED ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE ON FRONT PASTE-DOWN. Francis and Isabella Tudsbery occupied and managed the Champfleurie Estate and its famous gardens, near Linlithgow Palace, during much of the twentieth century. Their son Robin was an equerry to the late Queen Mother. The work was first published in 1901 with far fewer plates. With 16pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end, and small trade ticket os Harrison of Ipswich on front paste-down. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
