With plates bearing engraved illustrations of 30 scenes depicting primitive life and with 233 figures scattered through the text of objects most of which were found at archaeological sites. The development of mankind is examined from the earliest ancient stages of human life through the early Iron Age. Includes a preface to the English edition by E. B. T. --- In brown half calf and marbled paper-covered boards with elaborate gilt-tooled ornaments to spine 5 raised spine bands and a spine block with gilt titling. Matching marbled red/cream/blue endpapers and all textblock edges. --- With scuffs and chafing to leather and to cover edges a handful of small whitish specks of soiling to front cover which could be paint a scratch and mild rubbing to marbled paper covers otherwise a well-preserved unmarked copy.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xix 348 pages .
