One silver gelatin photograph sized 8 x 9.8 in. on thick photo paper stock and appears to be direct copyprint from glass plate negative 1 small tear lower right corner dustsoiling still VG sharp image. An original photograph of the famed Forestry Building which at one time was the largest log cabin in the World featuring one million board feet of old growth timber and renowned for the collonade of 52 uniform massive matching old growth trees with 6 foot trunks. Constructed by Simon Benson for the Exposition and largely an outlier from the Spanish Renaissance Revival architecture prevalent at the Fair the Forestry Building would survive the Exposition fall into disrepair and had been mostly restored in 1959 for the Oregon Sesquicentennial Celebration. First edition of this scarce work examining forest zones forestry practices and lumber and wood available in Japanese forests and tree farms at the end of the Meiji Era. In addition to discussion of forestry resources and the practices for Imperial Public and Private forests there are also discussions of conservation for certain forests either for aesthetic reasons or in maintaining environmental diversity and fish stocks. The collotype photographs are particularly well done and are reminiscent of the images produced by Kazumasa Ogawa 1860-1929 a pioneer in Japanese photography and photomechanical printing who had introduced collotype printing to Japan in the 1890s. This volume explores the arboreal residents of Southern England’s New Forest first proclaimed a Royal Forest in 1079 at the time 150 acres of protected hunting lands. Inter-weaved are poetry and anecdotes of oaks chestnuts elms birches conifers cypress â€Graveyard Trees†and even describes the California Sequoia and its attributes. Mary Greg 1809-1895 worked with her husband in establishing “The Mount†where she assisted her husband Samuel Greg II 1804-1876 British industrialist and Unitarian philanthropist and lecturer on scientfic subjects to the workers of Macclesfield. She was a close friend of the poet and author Elizabeth Gaskell who often stayed with the family and was a frequent correspondent while Mary Greg wrote on natural history and religious topics.
