Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece 28 engraved plates octavo pp 14 two-page publisher's catalogue at the rear age-toning and some signs of use internally though this is usually restricted to the margins with the contemporary signature of V. Owen Smythe of Condover Park and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages uncut and partially unopened the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. Indexed at the end of the first volume. Large format books the bindings measure 11 /14 inches tall by about 9 inches wide. Hardcovers bound in early 3/4 green calf with green cloth-covered boards. Bindings signed in type in the verso of the front flyleaves "Bound by Bayntun Riviere Bath England." Raised bands on the spines which have 6 compartments each. Dual leather labels per spine. The compartments are nicely stamped in decorative gilt with floral designs. Some rubbing to the bindings and spotting on the cloth. Faux marbled endpapers. Prior owner's signature of "William Lanier Hunt" on the second front flyleaves. Text is foxed especially at the front and rear. Nicely illustrated throughout. Collates complete with 24 color plates 12 per volume and numerous black and white full-page illustrations. Scarce in such nice bindings. Possibly a custom binding which would make this set unique. William Lanier Hunt 1906-1996 the former owner was known as the "Dean of Southern Horticulture." He donated land along the Morgan Creek in southern Orange County NC to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and is now known as the Hunt Arboretum. <br/> <br/> A. W. Darnell hardcover

Small slender octavo pp 40 the title page age-toned and a bit stained the last page marked and stained also a few early tick marks on the list of plants and various pencil crosses within the text recently bound in grey boards with paper label. SCARCE. The author trained at Kew between 180 1 and 1810; he then became Superintendant of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh a post he held till his death in 1848. He was responsible for a huge change in the Garden's accessions and oversaw the move to the present site at Inverleith Walk; a transition for which he designed a crude yet effective tree transplanter for moving many mature specimens.
