19440117551944. Scrapbook. Good. Spiral Bound. 11 x 15 inches 28 X 38 cm. Spiral-bound black card covers with pictorial inlay embossed floral design and gilt-stamped title Scrap Book. The covers are bowed a bit with light staining to the front cover rubbing wear to both covers and some edge wear. 31 pages numbered in pencil in the upper- corners. A magazine article pasted on one page is dated September 1944 which offers the best indication of when this scrapbook was created. The writing and grammar is that of a young student and this scrapbook was quite possibly a school project though neither a grade nor comments are found. Contents are found on both recto and verso of the pages and recto only for some pages. Inside the front cover is affixed a booklet titled "Our World in Pictures; The Cattle Industry." The first page has a pasted introduction hand-written on ruled notebook paper and pasted to the scrapbook page. Illustrated with newspaper and magazine articles as well as one color illustration and nonconsecutive numbered black and white photographic plates from a series depicting various aspects of beef production from pasture to processing plant to butcher. An engraved portrait frontispiece four engraved allegorical plates one folding engraved garden plan small octavo pp liii i 200 8 a two-page publisher's list the frontispiece is a little marked in the inner margin possibly from sellotape residue and both this and the title page are a bit age-toned the verso of the frontispiece has some late Victorian inscriptions otherwise the contents are quite clean bound in fairly recent boards with a paper spine label the upper boards a little marked. Blanche Henrey 1255 devoting a page of text and three illustrations to it - "long remained popular and quotations from it are to be found in many 17th and 18th century books on English gardening". This third English editiuon is the only one to include the extra plate. It was originally published in France in 1665. The translator was Subdean of Lincoln Cathedral and Switzer describes him as "a great lover of gardening". Boards. Good. Bernard Lintot Hardcover

RARE. From the library of the alpine nurseryman Will Ingwersen with his bookplate on the front endpaper. The first book in English to deal with alpine gardening. Twenty-five years later it attracted the sarcasm of William Robinson. This is the true first edition of 1845. There was a re-issue around fifteen years later - this is distinguishable only in the shape and design of the gilt wreath on the upper cover.
