A very fine copy. First edition of this Biennial Report. Includes the Reports for both 1893 and 1894. Covers the normal reports to the Governor etc. Also includes transactions of the sixteenth and seventeenth State Fruit Growers' Convention and of course information on the Horticultural Exhibit at the Midwinter Fair held in San Francisco 1894. The frontis illustration shows a portion of the exhibit; the second section of the book provides the article Exhibit at Midwinter Fair and Horticultural Day Tree pp. 443-451 including a photographic plate showing the Mission Olive Tree labeled the Horticultural Day Tree planted at the west side of the Fine Arts Building at the Midwinter Fair held in Golden Gate Park. This was one of the famous and historic trees at San Diego over a century old "from which dates the first period in the horticultural history of California." A beautifully produced book. Halkett & Laing give the author as 'Miss Carruthers of Inverness'. However a Lindley Library copy from Fred Stoker's library given to him by Thomas Hay has a note "Keep this little book it was written by Jane Paterson Baxter House Coupar Fife c 1870". . Small thick quarto pp 12 520 26 illustrated with an engraved title page an engraved frontispiece though here bound in after the preliminary pages and 45 plates of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56 some age-toning and slight foxing throughout the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book overall quite tight internally one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins full vellum binding probably original rather used and marked but quite sound and firm the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. The first Italian edition. Ferrari 1584 - 1655 was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome and a botanist. He devoted himself till 1632 to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and published De Florum Cultura which was illustrated with copperplates by amongst others Anna Maria Vaiani possibly the first female copper-engraver. The first book deals with the design and maintenance of the garden and garden equipment. The second book provides descriptions of the different flowers while the third book deals with the culture of these flowers. The fourth book continues with a treatise on the use and beauty of the flower species including their different varieties and mutations. The plants featured in Ferrari's research came from Cardinal Francesco Barberini's private botanical garden the Horti Barberini a garden which was under the care of Ferrari. Several Cape bulbs are illustrated for the first time - most notably Haemanthus coccinea but also Amaryllis bella-donna Brunsvigia orientalis and Ferraria crispa. Hunt Library Catalogue rather downbeat in its comment - "The fame rests more on the quality of the engraved plates than on their contribution to botanical knowledge". 1851048979New York: Green & Spencer 1851. Leather Bound. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quarto. 138 6 iv pages. Bound in original full red leather with ornate cover designs embossed in gilt. The binding shows rubbing bumping and wear but is quite sound. Rebacked in modern red leather with a largely plain spine bearing the title and a gilt roll at the headcap and foot and a small central device in the middle of the spine. Corners rebuilt with leather. All edges gilt. Modern faux marbled paper endpapers. Text is a bit toned and there is foxing on the plates. Most if not all of the plates have their tissue guards. No volume number at the front of the book but the general text ends on page 137 with "End of Vol. I" at the bottom of the page. An attractive sturdy work. <br/> <br/> Green & Spencer hardcover

The first three volumes are duplicates from East Malling Research Station librray the only marking being a stamp on the half-title and shelf numbers on the spines very clean internally stoutly bound in a good red quarter leather and cloth binding. Volume Four is smartly bound in brown cloth. Overall quite an attractive set. The second volume has an inscriptin from the authors and was originally given the othe botanist F.W. Andrews. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. The Flora not unexpectedly is an unusual work. It is a labour of love clearly carried out unhurriedly in the tradition of those great botanical scholars Tackholm would emulate. It has been hailed as a model of scholarship and completeness. One special feature is the detailed treatment of the extensive ancient Egyptian tomb flora; another is the attention paid throughout the volumes to agriculturally important plants and economic botany. Also the enormous bibliographies which provide access to the ancient and modern Arabic literature are gems" - extracted from Abraham D. Krikorian's obituary in "Nature". First Edition. After an introduction on literary treatments of flowers and bouquets the text is arranged alphabetically by English vernacular name Latin names used when no common name available and each section includes history cultivation details and quotations from poets on the subject. The conclusion offers six pages of "General observations" on the care of potted plants. Published anonymously the author was Elizabeth Kent the sister-in-law of the writer Leigh Hunt. Rea or Rhea seems to have been a highly respected gardener and when the first edition was ;published in 1665 stated "Fourty years ar now compleated since first I began to be a planter".
