Perché ¡Viva maria! è principalmente la storia di un'ossessione quasi amorosa per la pianta di canapa e i suoi utilizzi leciti e illeciti, e insieme un tentativo di padroneggiare questa ossessione, considerandola da un punto di vista narrativo. This romantic tale of Life on the Kentucky Hemp fields, avoids most of the drug associations later attached to marijuana. even as it discusses the intellectual climate in Kentucky around the turn of the century.
