1967218360Beijing Liaoning Shanxi.: Various Publishers. 1967. Collection of four Cultural Revolution newspapers edited by revolutionary and Red Guard committees in Beijing Liaoning and Shanxi. Newspapers such as these were published across China during the Cultural Revolution with many work units and education institutions publishing their own. All show browning a little heavier at edges a little staining and small tears at folds repaired with archival washi paper where necessary. Text in simplified Chinese characters apart from mastheads variously 55 x 39.5cm and 37.5 x 26cm. Issue 47 of 铜墙铁壁 published on 8 November 1967 6 pages published by the Liaoning Proletarian Revolutionary Liaison Station is a wholehearted denunciation of another newspaper the 辽宁报. Over 6 pages the banners and headlines call on people to criticise the Liaoning Bao because it’s ".an evil poisonous weed that opposes Mao thought .it’s a self confessed counter-revolutionary that has attacked the PLA. it has an evil plan to revive capitalism. and slanderously counters Mao’s opinion that the situation is good".

Issue 26 of 铜墙铁壁 published 13 August 1967 4 pages includes an article about burying the ‘Song Dynasty’ - an attack on Song Renqiong 宋任穷 a northeast anti-Party group leader accused of opposing Mao’s proletarian revolutionary line spreading poison through the media and implementing the evil instructions of Deng Xiaoping and Liu Shaoqi. According to a page 1 article military units belonging to this group attacked PLA soldiers there was armed conflict and civilians were killed. The revolutionaries then went to Beijing to extract Song Renqiong to be handed over for criticism and struggle.

Issue 63 of 长纓 1 November 1967 4 pages published by the Shanxi Yuncheng Criticize Liu and Deng Liaison Group focuses on the topic of revolutionising education. It begins with “The period of schooling must be shortened” and continues by quoting Mao in 1966 “capitalists and intellectuals can no longer dominate our education”. Issues such as “Transformation of Intellectuals” are explained quoting what Mao had said in 1943 1944 1956 and so on. Another article is a speech by General Ken Fu in the town of Yuncheng which had a problem with factionalism. He encourages unity in the fight against selfishness and revisionism and the study of Chairman Mao thought and its implementation “word for word”.

Issue 5 of 风雷 29 September 1967 4 pages published by the Workers’ Congress People’s Literature Publishing House Revolutionary Rebel Group is a special issue on literary criticism. Articles target Liu Shaoqi Bo Yibo Tao Zhu and Zhou Yang for praising or failing to censure certain works. Of particular interest is the catalogue of 17 “black plays” on page 4 with descriptions of why they are "poisonous weeds" and a denunciation of Tao Zhu for praising them. He was labelled a traitor who was trying to restore capitalism. From having been number 4 in the Party hierarchy by the time this was written Tao Zhu had already been in prison for months. .
