Ciò che non sapevano era che una nuova forza speciale mista statunitense-canadese stava già inerpicandosi sulle cime scoscese, non vista e pronta a lanciare un improvviso assalto a sorpresa per supportare l'attacco principale. Ma i difensori tedeschi erano esperti, induriti dalle battaglie, e avevano preparato le loro difese con cura: pur essendo stati colti alla sprovvista ci sarebbero voluti giorni di acceso combattimento per scacciarli. Questa fu la prima operazione della First Special Service Force, raccontata in una narrazione avvincente accompagnata da vivide illustrazioni e mappe accurate, in grado di rendere i dettagli dì una disperata battaglia combattuta nell'oscurità e nel gelo.
