Agli inizi del 1500 la Francia, che non aveva mai dimenticato d'esser stata per secoli padrona e donna del Meridione, voleva reimpossessarsi del Regno di Napoli, saldamente in mano della Spagna da un ventennio e vi inviò un esercito di terra. Sul mare si appoggiò al genovese Andrea Doria che costituì una flotta di tecnici esperti. Le navi spagnole si scontrarono con le Doria al largo di Capodorso-Erchie-Fonti nel 1528 in una poderosa battaglia navale in cui avvenne fra l'altro un caso straordinario e raro nella storia della Spagna moderna, l'uccisione cioè del Viceré Ugo de Moncada che era al comando della flotta napoletana. Il libro passa in rassegna tutte le vicende di merito, i riflessi storici e letterari che se ne ebbero, le personalità insigni che vi parteciparono.
