150 pages. Abstract as follows: "The vegetation of the Vernon map sheet area is diverse in response to variation in climate and site conditions. The diversity of the plant cover is characterized by vegetation types. The vegetation of the area is characterized by two Regions: the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. Within each region, patterns of zones (climactic climax potential) and subzones (successional patterns) are recognized. A standard reconnaissance vegetation survey was implemented and 290 vegetation plots were located. Computer analysis of the plots resulted in the identification of forty-five vegetation types, representing seral and climax vegetation in the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. For each type the relationships between environmental characteristics and vegetation were assessed. The evaluation of these relationships is important for the application of the vegetation information to resource management. Interpretations of each vegetation type are made for wildlife, forestry and recreation values. The interpretations provide information which can be used to assess relative values of vegetation for different users." Average wear. Unmarked. Minor sticker residue upon illustrated front cover. 298 pages. "The forest soil has been the object of scientific study for a relatively short time. In the Pacific Northwest, one of the principal forest growing areas of the world, the evaluation of the soil as a factor in the production of forest resources has an even shorter history, but a great deal of progress has been made. This volume represents an attempt to synthesize the results of these studies and thereby add direction to future work as well as provide current guidelines for management. Chapters include: Geology of the Douglas-Fir Region; The Klamath Mountains and Coast Ranges of Northern California; The Oregon and Washington Coast Ranges; The Willamette Valley; The Cascade Range in Oregon and Southern Oregon; The Olympic Mountains Province; Northern Cascade Mountains; Surficial Geology of the Puget Sound Lowlands; The San Juan Islands; Bedrock Geology of Vancouver; Suricial Geology of Vancouver Island; Geologic Look at Soils of the Douglas-Fir Region; Geology Glossary; Climate; Vegetation; Physical Properties and Physical Behavior of Forest Soils; Minerals, Chemical Properties and Fertility of Forest Soils; Organic Matter of Forest Soils; Forest Soils Biology; Soil Formation, Classification and Morphology; Forest Soil Survey; The Cycling of Elements Within Forests; Forest Soil Productivity Relationships; Soil, Vegetation and Watershed Management; Forest Chemicals in Watershed Management; Some Engineering Aspects of Forest Soils; Soil Management in Douglas-fir Nurseries; Forest Fertilization Practices.
