Appointed in 1763 as intendant of Saint Lucia Chardon administered the colony until it was annexed to the government of Martinique. Upon his return to Paris in 1764 he successively held positions as Maître des Requêtes intendant of Corsica Attorney General at the Royal Prize Council member of the Marine Administrative Committee and inspector of naval ports. In 1784 he was entrusted with the drafting of the work entitled Code des prises or Collection of Edicts on Privateering and the Administration of Captures. It explains for instance that in ""1688 it was forbidden to bring captures made in America anywhere but to Martinique"" and includes numerous documents referring to the ""United States of North America"" such as an ""excerpt from the Treaty of Amity and Commerce concluded between the King and the United States"" and accounts of ""captures made by American privateers armed in French ports."" 187012481Paris: Dusacq. Edr. 14 Boulev. De Poissonniere c.1870. Image: 517 by 835mm 20.25 by 32.75 inches. Sheet: 650 by 905mm 25.5 by 35.75 inches. Engraving with aquatint. The sixth and final state of the print "retouched" by Guesnu. Brunel's Hungerford Suspension Bridge has been re-engraved to become the Charing Cross Railway Bridge though some of its suspension cables are still visible. It shows Charing Cross Station Victoria Embankment Albert Embankment St Thomas's Hospital Cannon Street Railway Bridge but not Station and Blackfriars Railway Bridge very sketchily. We are aware of a fifth state without the additions by Guesnu but with the imprint 'Imp. Ch. et Alf. Chardon r. Hautefeuille 30 Paris'. The Bibliothèque Nationale's Inventaire du Fonds Français après 1808 Vol. 1 lists an edition printed in 1857 by Chardon which presumably is the date for this fifth state. Dusacq. Edr. 14 Boulev. 196876359Buenos Aires: Compana General Fabril editora 1968. Fine. Compana General Fabril editora Buenos Aires 1968 20 x 28.50 cm broché Second illustrated edition. Spine with some rubbing. Illustrated with drawings by Horacio Cardo. Rare presentation copy erroneously dated 1949 and signed by Jorge Luis Borges to his muse Ema Risso Platero : « à Emita con afecto innumerable. » Ema Risso Platero a Uruguayan diplomat was also a painter poet and writer notably the author of Arquitecturas del insomnio with a preface by Borges and a friend of Michel Foucault. In his book Emma karma de Borges the Uruguayan writer Fernando Loustaunau discusses the relationship between Borges and Emita and their final meeting in 1979 in Paris when the Argentine writer was in the city to receive the Gold Medal of the Académie Française. It was most likely on this occasion that Jorge Luis Borges presented this signed copy to his former muse mistakenly dating the inscription 1949 instead of 1979perhaps a nod to their shared past and enduring passions.
