Very good. - What is offered here are 19 black & white photographic movie stills for Columbia Pictures' 1970 British Thriller "Fragment of Fear". Each 10 inch high by 8 inch wide photograph has Columbia Pictures' copyright information printed along the bottom. One particularly evocative image portrays a disheveled David Hemmings walking down a cobbled dark alley under the trestles of a bridge or elevated train. The corners of several of the stills are creased with some minor creasing to the surfaces of a few stills. There are light brown spots to the top of one image. Very good. A recovering drug addict Tim Brett played by David Hemmings is visiting his rich aunt in an Italian coastal hotel when she is found murdered on a trip to Pompeii. His philanthropic aunt who had spent her life helping to rehabilitate criminals had expressed interest in helping some of Tim's former acquaintances. After meeting Juliet played by Gayle Hunnicutt the woman who discovered his aunt's body the two become involved in a relationship and Tim starts investigating and asking questions. Repeatedly threatened and warned away Tim makes contact with a secret government agency that appears to be after the same people. But all is not what it seems. Almost all photos measure 6" x 3" with a few exceptions 2 1/2" x 3;" 4" x 3" 4" x 2 1/2". Most of the photographs are tissue guarded and each picture is identified in neatly written white ink. The first page identifies the compiler . "To Mother/From/John and Flora." This is followed by pictures of Mt. Vernon George Washington's estate in Virginia . the front facade rear conservatory and grounds complete with behatted women most with long dark flowing skirts and a white blouse. The album also covers patriotic sites in Philadelphia to include the "Court of Honor" the Elks Convention in Philadelphia the graveyard where Benjamin Franklin is buried Betsy Ross' house as well as several pictures of Independence Hall. Then a lovely image of the Union Pacific train depot in Cheyenne Wyoming; Crossing the Alleghenys in Western Pennsylvania the Mormon Assembly Hall in Salt Lake City the Orphan Children’s Home in Womelsdorf PA. Then visits to a pair of cousins one scowling dowager the other pixie-grinning in Sheridan Pennsylvania and more relatives and their homes. The travelers then head West and the album features pictures of Charles Butters' Cyanide Reduction Works in Virginia City Nevada a derailed steam engine with John the album’s compiler who appears elsewhere in the album captioned "me" and arguably the owner of the railroad! standing in front of the wrecked locomotive holding up the now-detached train number 2158 with the caption: "When my engine 'got tired.'" Another photo gathers the whole train crew stacked up atop the engine high like a pile of human coal with an entirely new locomotive this one Number 2185 followed by a picture of the Railroad Station at Mound House. Then "Moonlight on the Truckee River Reno Nev." and the "New Concrete Bridge over the Truckee River." Soon comes a shot of an Indian infant on a papoose board; several pictures of the furnace in Sheridan Pennsylvania a "'Ten Mule Team' Hauling Grain to Virginia City Mound House;" Piute "Sagebrush Belles" and "Piute Squaw and Papoose." 19100012200Union Missouri: Teen Journal Academic Notebook Missouri Student Junior High. Fair with no dust jacket. 1910. Softcover. On offer is a delightful notebook which is at once a journal and academic notebook of a young teenager in Union Missouri in the early 20th century. This book belonged to Florence Flora Schiller 1897-1993 who was born in Union Missouri to Ida Mantles and Charles Schiller. At the time this notebook was written she was a 13 year old middle school student. Schiller lived her entire life in or near Union. She worked in shoemaking until becoming a housewife when she married Frank Herbst 1886-1969 a cabinet maker. They were married in 1932 later in life for both and there is no evidence that they had children. Flora kept this notebook between November 1910 and late April 1911. It is clearly intended to be a notebook recording Floras academic subjects but she blends her academic notes with personal making this journal an insightful look into the life experience of a 13-year-old girl. The book opens with Floras handwritten summaries of her schools Literary Society meetings which includes the names of dozens of her classmates transitions into notes for a history exam to the lyrics of the school song and similarly oscillates back and forth between personal affairs and academic throughout the book. At the end she writes the script for a school play she participated in in the 7th grade. Academic subjects noted include literature mathematics geography history and civics. Throughout the notebook her personality is evident and behind the lessons a reader can glimpse a lively good-humoured child: Examinations/The other night I went to bed/But not to sleep for my poor head/Was filled with a most awful dread/Examinations! /I thought of this and then of that/Of set and sit which goes with sat /I fear my brain has run to fat p12. Many lessons followed a classic rote methodology with focused fact-based questions followed by answers. History lessons were focused very much on American history: What two naval battles were similar in importance The two naval battles that were similar in importance were Paul Jones sea fight and Constitution captures Guerriere p21. Many of the history lesson point to a wider cultural approach to the American experience and philosophy: Peter Zenger editor of New York newspaper dared to find fault with Gov Cosby he was put in prison. When the day for the trial came on hand the judges were surprised to see Hamilton in the courtroom. He declared in a speech that it was not the poor editors fault nor of New York alone. It is the cause of Liberty. Zenger was set free p 81. For a cultural historian this notebook is a fine glimpse into the world of early 20th century mid-west America. Through what is taught to children an observer can discern what the larger community believes is important and values. For an educator this is an excellent example of teaching that took place a century earlier. A genealogist would find the names of classmates a welcome source of information. This small notebook measures 8.5 inches by 6.75 inches and contains 106 pages. It is 100 % complete. The cover is in fairly good condition with some chipping and staining. The binding is sewn and the stitching is extremely loose but all pages are intact. The spine was bound with tape which has worn through in places especially the upper and lower corners. 1940 Highly Relatable Letter from a Friend Who Just Could Not Make it to the Hospital for a Visit and Feels Just Terrible

On offer is a sweet letter written to Mrs. Daisy Ball Bailey 1897-1964 of Dalton Pennsylvania from her friend Flora who lives in nearby Factoryville PA. The letter was written on May 12 1940 and addressed to Daisy at home in Dalton although at the time of writing Daisy was hospitalized having undergone surgery. The letter is four pages one single page folded in half with writing on four sides. Throughout the entire letter Flora provides Daisy with multiple reasons possibly excuses as to why she was unable to come to the hospital to visit her. Floras reasons include: she was packing she was busy serving her husbands colleagues meals Daisys husband never told her the visiting hours at the hospital and that she got lost on the way to the hospital. She then sends Daisy endless good wishes including a wish that Daisy would come and stay with her soon. While it was written over 80 years ago it will ring very true to any modern person who is trying and failing to do it all. This letter would be a great reminder that we are all doing our best and would look perfect framed in the office of a busy and hard-working 21st century person. The letter is written in pencil and is very legible. Paper shows some signs of age toning and folds are visible. No rips or tears. The envelope is present but the stamp has been cut out. 1941-1942 Original Handwritten Diary Recording the Life of a Rural Michigan Woman in Her 60s As the United States Joins the Second World War

19410010019On offer is the 1941 to 1942 diary of 64-year-old Michigan resident Flora Coyne. This interesting notebook chronicles one woman's experiences in rural America during World War Two and includes an entry on the day Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Coyne was born in 1876 and lived her life in rural Michigan. She passed away in 1947 at the age of 70. Her husband Patrick had passed away in 1936 five years before she wrote this diary. She had one son Basil. Coyne does not follow the dated entries in this diary but records her days using whatever space she requires. Her entries detail the daily comings and goings of her family and circle of friends. "Charley Mauley Basil & I drove to Harrison Mich to Conservation sale of land. E 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec 5-18-6 of Freeman Twp 83& 92/100 acres. All this time there was lots of snow in Clare Co. We got back to L George had dinner and Mauley left for Bannister" January 24 1941. "Got electric pump from Mr. Luce. New $34.95. Did usual work" July 24 1941. "Nice bright day. Cleaned up house. Baked cookies. Every one of deer hunters class was out in the woods. Bernard came about 7 PM. He came alone -- told us Mary was going home to . Mr. Dodge and Miller called in evening. Came up to Jeffrey's cottage to hunt deer. Told us about Peanut being so sick" November 15 1941. ". Basil left for Pontiac. Shortly after they left we heard the news over the radio that Japan had attacked our islands of Hawaii and bombed Honolulu & Pearl Harbor killing many soldiers and wounding many others. As day advanced to nite more news of attacks on Pacific Islands and Philippines Islands also. In Washington our capital plans were being made to declare war on the Empire of Japan by Congress and our President Roosevelt" December 7 1941. This 5-year diary measures 5 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. The covers are in fair condition showing some wear and weathering. The strap on the clasp is broken. The spine has broken but the covers remain attached as do all of the pages. The pages themselves are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. The diary spans from January 1941 to August 1942. Coyne did not write every day. This diary presents a straightforward account of daily life in rural Michigan as the United States enters into World War Two. The descriptions paint a clear picture of her daily routines and the names mentioned can serve as a cross-reference for genealogical research in Michigan. For a researcher in women's studies this book offers a good illustration of the social role that formed the experience of many women prior to WWII. hardcover
