2990Primrose's letter 25 November 1873 and the fragment undated; both on letterhead '11 Downing Street Whitehall.'. Peel 1829-1912 was a Liberal politician and Speaker of the House of Commons. Primrose 1846-1923 was a Privy Councillor Secretary to Gladstone and Speaker of the House of Commons. Both items are 3 pages on 16mo bifoliates. Both are creased and discoloured. Between 1873 and 1874 Peel was Patronage Secretary to the Treasury. The exchange apparently concerns an election or by-election in Exeter. In the letter to Ford Primrose says that Peel 'desires me to mention that it will depend upon the Lord Chancellor's movements whether the Writ leaves London on Monday or on Tuesday' as if the Chancellor is in the country 'the messenger who takes it down to the Chancellor to be sealed cannot get back to London until the middle of the day on the Tuesday'. In the meantime Primrose will find out and let Ford know which day. The letter is signed 'H W Primrose'. The fragment apparently the conclusion of a letter to Ford from Peel signed 'Arthur W. Peel' but in Primrose's hand explains that the election cannot be delayed for more than six days. Any longer 'would be sure to excite remark & lead to enquiries into the reason . The Writ will leave London on Monday evening.' In a postscript he says he is returning the stamps 'as I have not had occasion to make use of them'. Primrose's letter, 25 November 1873, and the fragment undated; both on letterhead '11, Downing Street, | Whitehall.' unknown

Octavo four volumes bound in one each with separate title page and frontispiece; old ownership stamp on first title-page and a related gift inscription on endpaper; contemporary quarter black roan.

Uncommon account of the voyage of the Coquille the French scientific expedition under the command of Louis-Isidore Duperrey. This is the Brussels edition published in the same year as the Paris edition. A detailed and engaging narrative it was written by René Primevere Lesson surgeon and naturalist on the voyage and includes much detail lacking in Duperrey's own account. The expedition travelled extensively throughout the Pacific including Tahiti and the Solomons and stopped at Port Jackson before sailing to the Bay of Islands. Lesson was a careful and lively observer. He received little formal education and joined the navy as medical assistant; here his natural aptitude was recognised and formal training as a surgeon ensued. Lesson was fascinated by natural history from a young age and relished the many opportunities offered during the voyage of the Coquille.

Lesson describes his personal interactions with native peoples throughout the Pacific including King Bungaree at Port Jackson who was tasked with waiting upon the French officers with his Aboriginal companions. By the early 1820s the Pacific was undergoing rapid social change and hopeful expectations often did not match the reality encountered. On anchoring in Tahiti the Frenchmen were disappointed 'finding to their astonishment that this renowned South Seas paradise was turning into a strict puritanical society ruled by fundamental English missionaries' Dunmore. Nonetheless Lesson's observations are of lasting value especially his vocabularies that include MÄori and Aboriginal dialects.

. N.-J. Gregoir, V. Wouters et Cie unknown

2020BIBHB0020856352020. Hardcover. New. About the Book:-The author reveals that this little book will he hopes supply a want which has been much felt ever since our annexation of Upper Burma. The only land route to Upper Burma from Assam and Bengal is through Manipur The journey through Manipur occupies about a fortnight. Hardly any Manipuri knows any language but his own so officers travelling through find great difficulty in getting at the different stage the supplies which they are in want of owing to their inability to make themselves under stood by the Manipuri officials. Manipur is now the headquarters of an Assam regiment and in all probability it will remain for some time to come a Military Station owing to the healthiness of its climate as well as to its admirable strategically position in the event of any outbreak on the frontier. The above reasons have made a knowledge of Manipuri of greater importance than in former years. With the object of assisting in the study of Manipuri he has prepared a grammar vocabulary and phrase book of the language. In the vocabulary section he has arranged the nouns under different headings such as relationship trades etc. which is he thinks a simpler plan than jumbling up in alphabetical order a number of words having no connection with each other. The English phrases he has copied from Cutter's Assamese Phrase Book. He has added at the end of the book a few Manipuri proverbs and also a few specimens of letters in Manipuri in order to give an idea of the style of address adopted in such compositions.
