In-12, xlii-410-[4]p. Troisième édition, revue, corrigée et considérablement augmentée. Avec un frontispice dépliant et 5 planches gravées dépliantes également en fin de volume. L'auteur, avocat au Parlement et censeur Royal à Paris, nous donne à comparer l'organisation d'une ruche avec l'organisation idéale d'un gouvernement démocratique. Deux lectures possibles : un pamphlet sur la royauté ou une étude très approfondie sur la vie, l'organisation et la production d'une ruche. Il est aussi bien question "de l'inclinaison des abeilles pour le travail" que la "destruction pour détruire les insectes nuisibles à la ruche", mais aussi "comment empecher un essain de rentrer dans la mère-ruche, après s'en etre séparé" et "moyens de tirer profit des abeilles sans les étouffer". C est dans les éditions de 1742 et de 1758 que l'auteur récuse notamment les observations, pourtant exactes, de Réaumur dont les travaux développés dans ses Mémoires pour servir à l histoire des insectes (1740) avaient alors été abondamment diffusés en Europe. Bien que louant les qualités de la recherche, des textes et des illustrations proposés par ce dernier, Simon émet des doutes quant à la nature de la monarchie dans la ruche et se montre sceptique à propos de l'abeille-mère et du mode de reproduction. L auteur croyait en une monarchie associant un roi et une reine. Les conclusions étaient à l époque soutenues par Voltaire, lui-meme passionné d apiculture. L édition est illustrée d un frontispice dessiné et gravé par Tardieu et de 5 planches dépliantes gravées par Tardieu d après Mazelin. Bien complet des 6 planches. Magnifique exemplaire dans sa reliure d'époque parfaitement conservée.
