2002011104Cambridge University Press 2002. A few illustrations and charts within the text pp viii 274 laminated boards a very good copy. The multitrophic level approach to ecology addresses the complexity of food webs much more realistically than the traditional focus on simple systems and interactions. Only in the last few decades have ecologists become interested in the nature of more complex systems including tritrophic interactions between plants herbivores and natural enemies. Plants may directly influence the behaviour of their herbivores' natural enemies ecological interactions between two species are often indirectly mediated by a third species landscape structure directly affects local tritrophic interactions and below-ground food webs are vital to above-ground organisms. The relative importance of top-down effects control by predators and bottom-up effects control by resources must also be determined. These interactions are explored in this exciting volume by expert researchers from a variety of ecological fields. This book provides a much-needed synthesis of multitrophic level interactions and serves as a guide for future research for ecologists of all descriptions. First Edition. Pictorial laminated boards. Very Good. Cambridge University Press Hardcover

2017012559Kota Kinabalu & Singapore 2017. Very well illustrated large 8vo pp xii 261 pictorial laminated boards dustwrapper. This is a new copy but there has been a very slight bumping of the corners in transit. The first volume of A Taxonomic Guide to the Stick Insects of Borneo stunned the entomological world with its extensive photographs and comprehensive identification keys. Volume II continues in this tradition to open new trails to a better understanding of Bornean stick insect fauna. This time the author concentrates his efforts on the stick insects of Mount Trusmadi the second highest mountain in Borneo with her peak at 2642 m asl. Besides Trusmadi the author also studied the drawers of the entomological collections of Kinabalu Park and Forest Research Centre Sepilok. Volume II lists 373 Bornean species or subspecies from 92 genera with descriptions of 4 new genera 1 genus new to Borneo 37 new species 4 new name combinations 3 new synonyms; 2 wrong synonyms and 9 descriptions of the previously unknown sex of known species. Together these two volumes will have described 19 new genera with 88 new species. This volume is an indispensable reference to anyone interested in the insect fauna of Borneo; no matter if its just for admiring the splendid photographs or trying to identify an insect in the forest or most essentially for the person working through a taxonomic problem. First Edition. Pictorial laminated boards. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover

20070067622007. NEW. Very well illustrated large 8vo pp x 115 a very good copy in dustwrapper. The metalwing demoiselles of the eastern tropics include 14 species in two genera of calopterygid damselflies distributed from Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the west to southern China and New Guinea in the east. With their brilliant iridescent hindwings the males of Neurobasis are among the most conspicuous and well-known inhabitants of clear forest streams throughout the region. The renowned odonatologist M.A. Lieftinck was so impressed by their beauty he called them the 'Birds of Paradise' among Odonata. lifetime goal of Lieftinck and before him Friedrich Ris was to produce a full taxonomic revision of the group. Sadly both died before their aims could be realised. This book provides this revision and includes a new species described from the highlands of New Guinea in 2006. Patterns of speciation are discussed in their zoogeographical context and in the light of recent molecular studies of the higher classification of the Calopterygidae. The book also includes a detailed historical account of the study of metalwings beginning with the description of 'Libellula chinensis' by Carl von Linné the father of taxonomy from a decorative coloured drawing in a book on rare birds published in 1750. In the past few decades a good deal of work has focussed on the biology of these insects including analyses of their complex mating behaviour and of the physical basis for their brilliant colours. This book summarises all published information on all aspects of metalwing biology and includes also many original observations on their ecology and behaviour based on the authors personal experiences.
