Acquaforte misure: mm 291 x 432 Pittore e incisore francese. Iniziò la sua carriera nella bottega paterna dove si specializzò nell'arte vetraria. In età adolescenziale riuscì a trasferirsi a Parigi e qui si formò presso i vari mestieranti conducendo una vita da bohemien. Nel 1634 si recò a Roma dove entrò in contatto con Andrea Sacchi, Claude Lorrein e con l'arte del Caravaggio. La formazione in Italia gli permise di accentuare il suo eclettismo e di raggiungere una intensità pittorica che verrà molto apprezzata in Francia. I temi ricorrenti nelle sue opere sono i paesaggi in cui vengono immersi soggetti storico-religiosi. In questa stampa viene rappresentato, in un paesaggio minuziosamente descritto scandito da contrasti chiaroscurali, l’episodio biblico di Giuseppe sulle rive del Nilo. In primo piano sulla destra egli è seduto sul parapetto in pietra di una fontana, è colto di profilo con il volto verso i suoi interlocutori con la mano sinistra aperta e appoggiata sulla gamba sta discutendo con alcuni uomini che lo circondano. Alle loro spalle un altro gruppo di figure; un uomo in piedi che sembra stia indicando il cammino ad alcuni mendicanti. Il tutto sotto un cielo plumbeo solcato da nubi, che si diradano in prossimità delle catene montuose sullo sfondo che chiudono questo ampio paesaggio fluviale. Un'alta torre sullo sfondo dalla forma polilobata domina con la sua massa il centro della scena, si erge al centro di una città d’epoca romana con un ponte di legno, un edificio simile al Colosseo, un arco di trionfo, rovine e un mulino ad acqua. In primo piano da foglie di un cespuglio rampicante si inerpicano sul tronco di un albero dalle ricche fronde sulla sinistra. In basso a destra, inciso, "S. Bourdon pinx et fe C.P.R”. La stampa perciò era protetta dal copyright reale, Cum Privilegio Regis. Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi. Ottimo stato di conservazione, eccetto una piega verticale visibile solo al verso. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Filigrana: grappolo d'uva nel cerchio con scritta Colombier (Haewood, 2431).
