He worked in the Prussian War Ministry during the WW1. From 1924 to 1938 Böttcher was managing director of Hörselwerke, a company in Eisenach that specializes in the production of folding rules. After the Second World War Böttcher lived in the GDR, where his literary works were published at that time, but also had a residence in the Federal Republic. Towards the end of the 1950s he went to West Germany, where he lived in Sprendlingen in Hesse. Helmuth Maximilian Böttcher was the author of novels, short stories, plays and radio plays.
