Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt fillet on sides, marbled edges, spine somewhat rubbed, slightly damaged at head and foot. Stourm 81; Conlon 51:499; INED 1094 (one part only); not in Kress; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi. First edition. Legal and historical work dealing with Machault's plans to tax the ecclesiastical properties. The clergy maintained that they were exempt from tax and that whatever they paid was a voluntary gift. Chauvelin maintains that the clergy can not be exempt from taxes if the king thinks he ought to ask a contribution from them. The issue was hotly debated at the time, as the long list of works cited by Stourm shows. The work was condamned, Machault's plans failed and the exempt position of the clergy was maintained upto the revolution.

Contemporary marbled calf, spines gilt in compartments, labels with gilt lettering. Kress B.4507; Musset-Pathay 23; not in Goldsmiths; not in Einaudi. First French edition. The Rev. Adam Dickson is best known for his Husbandry of the Ancients of which this is the first French translation, derived from the Scriptores rei rusticae and other writers, and compared with the modern system. Palgrave mentions that his practical knowledge enabled him to clear up many difficulties but 'his scholarship was imperfect.''A good classical scholar, and an excellent practical farmer' (McDonald, Agricultural Writers, p. 211.) Fussell, in his More Old English Farming Books, writes that none of Dickson's publications was so important as the present work.
17357Londres, 1787. 88 pp. 8vo. Modern half morocco. Kress B.1266 (other edition); Goldsmiths 13454 (other edition); Einaudi 3412 (other edition); INED 2915 (other edition); Stourm, pp. 145-146 (other edition). One of three editions from the same year, no priority has been established. The French crown faced bankruptcy when the Controller-General, Calonne, presented a financial scheme to end the crisis. The keystone in his program was a tax to be levied on all property owners without discrimination of estate. Calonne also proposed liberating commerce in grains from all internal tariffs. When Calonne was unable to pass this in the Assembly of Notables, he was replaced by Loménie de Brienne. 'Linguet lent the support of his publicity to the Calonne property tax and published this work just after the Notables had turned down Calonne's master plan. (.....) Linguet viewed it as a means by which the government, provisioned in grains, could compete with entrepreneurs, control the market price of wheat, and in that way guarantee the lives of an impoverished and progressively more restless population of dispossessed persons. Linguet saw the unpopular tax program as a key government stratagem for warding off two spectres: bankruptcy and a people's revolution' (D. Gay Levy, The Ideas and Careers of Simon-Nicolas-Henri Linguet, p. 240). - Name on title.
26200A Aix, Chez André Adibert, Imprimeur du Roi, vis-à-vis le College, 1782. Five works on one volume. 46 pp.; 46 pp.; 31, (1) pp.; 24 pp.; 9, (1) pp. Small folio. Modern boards. None of these items in Conlon. Each work has a very nice engraved head-piece, and the place, name of printer and date are printed in these head-pieces. The head-piece of the fourth work depicts a castle and a house. Deals with the right of tax collecting (tax-farming) by Chabert and the predicted amounts of money to be collected. Chabert won the right to collect the taxes among the members of the guild, and for which right he paid the guild of cobblers, but revenues fell far behind what was predicted/expected. At least one of the reasons was the emigration of vast numbers of "garçons" as a response to measures taken by the guild itself, another the departure of many cobblers after a large fleet had left Marseille. The question here is if Chabert is entitled to discounts or refunds of money he already paid to the guild and if he is to be held accountable for failing to collect the predicted/expected sums of money. The first text is preceded by a handwritten summary of the entire matter of two pages, the second piece has handwritten annotations at the end stating the Chambre de Tournelle affirmed the verdict by arret of 16 july 1782: the second piece finds the guild (the Maîtres Cordonniers) guilty.
17375A Paris, De l'Imprimerie Royale, 1774. 90 pp. 4to. Modern boards. Catalogue des Actes Royaux, vi, 38447. Rare and very important text ending the exile of the Parlements and signalling the start of what were to be unsurmountable problems for the Crown in the last decade upto the Revolution. Initiated by Turgot this 'Lit de Justice' became the origin of the troubles Louis XVI had to face. Through this 'Lit de Justice', the Parlements and Sovereign courts were re-established with all their original prerogatives. The edicts concerning this event cover the pages 39-90.The edicts were read to the assembled magistrates on Saterday 12 November, and in a short speech the king acquainted the high nobility of his intensions, explained his motives, and ended by saying that he would restrain his Parlements within their proper limits. The king also warned them: they had provoked the righteous anger of his predecessor (Louis XV and Maupeou had suppressed the parliaments in 1771), and if when returned they failed to respect the wishes of the Crown, they would be sent again into exile. The re-establishment was under several restrictions, but all these provisions proved to be illusory, because the Parlements would attempt to gain inch by inch the ground they had lost, and because no Ministry could be counted upon to remain firm for all time in face of opposition (see: D. Dakin, Turgot and the Ancien Regime, (London, 1939), pp. 136 ff.) - Margin of titlepage neatly repaired, some scribbling to title-page and browned.

These three pieces of this trial are for the most part by Prevost de Saint-Lucien who greatly promoted the idea of charitable institutions. The trial itself deals with the freedom of poor marchants to sell their goods at designated places and illuminate their small tables with candles. Some responsible for maintaining order thought that this form of illumination of the small table and selling goods should be suppressed although a royal decree allowed the merchants to earn a living. Notes and copies of the relevant decrees etc. are included as printed notes. - Two leaves with a small repair in the inner blank margin.
19238(Paris, Imprimerie de l'Assemblée Nationale, 1848). 3 volumes in one. 376 pp.; 335, (1) pp.; 254 (misnumbered 252) pp. 4to. Contemporary red half morocco, corners, marbled boards, spine gilt with gilt lettering, top edge gilt. Bibliothèque Nationale. La Révolution de 1848, 866. Original edition. The events of May 15 deal with a large demonstration mounted by Parisian clubists and workers to pressure the Assembly to send troops to the aid of Poland which escalated into an invasion of the Assembly and the proclamation of a New Provisional Government, including Louis Blanc and other leftists. But the Executive Commission soon dispersed the demonstrators, arrested the most popular leaders -including Albert, Barbès and Blanqui- and suppressed many of the clubs. Draconian laws prohibited street gatherings, consequent mass arrests, and the Assembly's hostility to social reform created a situation electric with fear and anger. This was precipitated into insurrection by the Assembly's decision on 21 June to slash the rolls of the National Workshops. For four days, an unprecedented civil war tore the city in two. The June uprising started with several large gatherings at the Place de la Bastille and at the Pantheon on 22 June and the morning of June 23 and were followed by the erection of hundreds of barricades throughout eastern Paris. The June days then were an insurrection of Parisian workers against the government of the Second Republic which was crushed by the army in the bloodiest street figthing in Paris before the Commune of 1871. Alexis de Tocqueville noted the working-class character in the insurrection, and Karl Marx called the June Days the first great class struggle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. Very valuable source. The rapports contain a.o.: Documents relatifs à Louis Blanc. - Documents relatifs à M. Caussidiére. - Documents relatifs à l'affaire de Belgique. - Actes du Gouvernement provisoire. - Documents sur les Clubs. - Ateliers nationaux. - Documents fournis par les préfectures, etc. The leading man of this 'Commission d'Enquête' was A. Bauchart who was vehemently attacked by Victor Hugo and Louis Blanc. A major and fundamental source for the 1848 revolution. - Quire 10 in the third volume disbound but complete.
