George 1839-1897 an unknown printer in 1870's San Francisco witnessed the city's evolution from rough encampment to wealthy metropolis while at the same time observing the emergence of pauperism. He endeavored to discover why wealth grew simultaneously with poverty and after years of study produced this book determining that a single tax on land value was the solution. Once early publishing difficulties were overcome sales of the book skyrocketed into the millions internationally exceeding all titles other than the bible in the 1890s. As a result the Single Tax Movement was founded and George soon became the third most famous American behind only Thomas Edison and Mark Twain. George inscribed this copy to Wm. B. Scott with whom he worked at The Standard a weekly single-tax newspaper George founded and published from 1887 to 1890. Four pamphlets bound into early brown calf with an elaborate floral device embossed in blind at the center of both the front and rear covers within an elaborate outer gilt ruled frame with formal decorations. All edges are marbled. The rubbed & worn covers are detached and the spine has perished and thus lacking. The pagination is as follows: i-xii 1-96 pp.; 5 6-45 1 pp.; 5 folding plates; 5 6-66 pp.; 4 pp. 1-82. There is foxing throughout.<p>The ownership name of James Stewart and the faded date of "1881" is penned on the front blank. In what appears to be his hand the statement "From Pierre Soule" is penned along the top of the verso of the front endpaper. Additionally the attractive sienna-toned ex-libris bookplate of "R.G.S." is mounted on the front pastedown. <p>Stated to be from the library of Pierre Soule with his name signature at the head of the first pamphlet. Soule 1801-1870 was the French-born New Orleans attorney and Louisiana Senator.<p>The lawyer involved in these 4 cases Gustave Louis Chaix d'Est-Ange 1800 - 1876 was the son of the attorney general at the court of criminal justice of Reims. As a lawyer his oratorical talent was noted at the Paris bar where he practiced. He was entrusted with a number of important cases and from 1842-1844 was president of the Paris Bar Association.<p>1 Plaidoyer et réplique de Me Chaix-d'Est-Ange dans le procès d'Émile de La Roncière précédés d'une Note de M. le lieutenant-général Clément de la Roncière d'Esquisse préliminaire de M. Eugène Roch et d'une lettre de M. Émile de La Roncière adressée à "l'Observateur des tribunaux". Paris: De L'Imprimerie De Dezauche 1835. The sensational trial of Emile de La Ronciere 1803 - 1874 was most recently memorialized by John Fowles in his novel "The French Lieutenant's Woman". In chapter 28 of the novel he discusses the trial of the young cavalry officer who was accused of raping Marie the sixteen-year-old daughter of his commanding General Baron de Morell. The trial itself revolved around a series of anonymous letters threatening the Morell family and signed "E. de La R.". La Ronciere was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison. The verdict was controversial and has been debated for many years. In the pamphlet at hand is included the text of a letter to the l'Observateur des Tribunaux written by La Ronciere's father Clement de La Ronciere on August 25 1835 and one written by the imprisoned La Ronciere himself on September 10 1835. These are followed by a preliminary outline by Eugene Roch. The text from the trial is based on reporting in l'Observateur des Tribunaux journal des documens judiciaires. It begins with the plea of La Ronciere's attorney Chaix d'Est-Ange. Although misbound later in this collection of pamphlets facsimiles of items used as evidence in the trial are included. These include 4 folding facsimiles on which are printed 8 samples of handwriting of La Ronciere and of Marie de Morell. Also included on a fifth folding plate is a remarkable plan of the home of the Morells with a view of the floor where Marie's room was located.<p>2 Plaidoyer de Me Chaix-d'Est-Ange pour M. le ministre du Commerce et des Travaux publics intervenant contre M. Victor Hugo. Paris: Imprimerie De Pihan Delaforest 1832. Victor Hugo's play "Le Roi s'amuse" was the basis for the libretto of Verdi's opera Rigoletto. The opening of the play on November 22 1832 was highly anticipated. The opening night box office receipts were an enormous success but the play was not. Both the audience and the critic's responses were negative. However the most devastating response came from the Minister of the Interior. He saw the play as an attack on the royal family and ordered it suspended i.e. banned. In the Charter of 1830 censorship was stipulated to "never be re-established". This conflict led to a trial on December 19 1832. Odilon Barrot represented Hugo and Chaix d'Est-Ange represented the Ministry of Commerce. He took the unpopular stand that the State had the authority to examine dramatic works before production. His plea is published here. Hugo lost this free-speech debate and the play was banned for 50 years.<p>3 Plaidoyer de M. Chaix d'Est-Ange pour le sieur Auguste Labauve et les sieur et dame Formage plaignans et parties civiles contre Frédéric Benoît accusé. Paris: Imprimerie De Pihan Delaforest Morinval 1832. A VIVID ACCOUNT OF MATRICIDE! Frederic Benoit 1810 - 1832 known as "Le Parricide" was executed by the guillotine at the Place St. Jaques in the 14th arrondisement of Paris on August 30 1832. The story of Benoit's killing of his mother in November 1829 and that of his male lover seventeen-year-old Joseph Formage on July 22 1831 is well documented and need not be repeated here. In this civil plea of June 14 1832 on behalf of the butcher Auguste Labauve and also on behalf of Joseph Formage's parents Chaix d'Est-Ange outdoes himself in painting with vibrant colors the slaughter by Benoit of his own mother. Labauve was the second victim of this crime. In January of 1830 an anonymous letter was found threatening Benoit's father a justice of the peace as well as Labauve with the same fate as that of Madame Benoit. The letter was said to be in the hand of Labauve. He was brought to trial for murder and was acquitted by a divided jury. However he was sentenced to a 5 year prison term for having written the threatening letter.<p>4 Procès fait à la lettre adressée au duc d'Orléans par Cauchois-Lemaire. Paris: Delangle Freres Libraires 1828. In December 1827 the editor of the Constitutionnel Louis Francois Auguste Cauchois-Lemaire 1789 - 1861 published a notorious 69 page pamphlet "Sur la crise actuelle lettre a S.A.R. le duc d'Orleans". The pamphlet addressed to Louis-Philippe the Duke of Orleans was a powerful attack on the ultra-royalist government of Joseph de Villele and a denunciation of the so-called "massacre" that took place on the rue Saint-Denis on July 27 1827. Cauchois-Lemaire concludes his essay paraphrasing the French "Thus liberty awaits the day which should let it emerge from its prison. And we who are tired of the long wait together we call for a favorable star to hasten it." The result was that Cauchois-Lemaire was accused of trying to persuade the duc d'Orleans the "favorable star" to lead the opposition to the government and have it overthrown. He and the two publishers Ponthieu and Schubart were brought to trial on January 12 1828. Cauchois-Lemaire was sentenced to 15 months in La Force prison in addition to a fine. In defense of Cauchois-Lemaire Chaix d'Est-Ange given that the facts of the matter were difficult to vindicate delivered a brilliant thesis on constitutional law. The press at the time praised his eloquence. Cauchois-Lemaire himself was so impressed that he wrote Delangle Freres from prison on January 28 1828 requesting that they publish a transcript of the trial. Frontispiece portrait of George III in volume one. John Adolphus 17681845 was an English barrister and historian. This his major work was first published in 1802. It includes summaries of parliamentary debates and Adolphus was praised for it in issue No. 2 of the Edinburgh Review. The papers of George Dodington 1st Baron Melcombe had been placed at Adolphus's disposal in the preparation of his history and they enabled him to throw light on the conduct of Lord Bute and on the political transactions of the earlier years of the reign of George III who in conversation commented on the accuracy with which some of the first measures taken after his accession had been described. Extremely scarce. The volumes are in excellent condition with occasional foxing throughout but unmarked tight square and clean. The present is the only example on the market.<br /> <br /> The Dandy Wife is narrated by a man who aimed "to choose me out a loving wife" at the age of twenty-one but whose experience becomes a warning to "all young men of high renown": "If you want a tidy wife Beware of a boarding school." What unfolds is a satire of how the marriage economy is affected when women have access to knowledge -- intellectual and physical -- and how by meeting a man's superficial expectations a woman can fulfill her own more pressing needs.<br /> <br /> Thinking that a boarding school girl will have the innocence submissiveness and domestic skill he desires the narrator selects a wife from among their ranks. Thinking only of what he can obtain from such a bargain he is unprepared for what an educated woman brings into his house. The Dandy Wife he describes understands the commodity value of her own beauty and material adornment and that these are her key means for acquiring wealth of her own. "She takes one-half of what I earn In drinking gin and tea; Besides such frills and furbelows My Dandy Wife does wear.Her sleeves upon her dandy gown Oh! Lack they're such a size You'd think they were two balloons that in the air would rise." Aside from staying on par with fashion trends her clothing assists her in avoiding domestic tasks she abhors. She refuses to do laundry more than monthly and through ridiculous cooking failures she rapidly establishes that the kitchen is not a showcase for her skillset. Accustomed to a life of learning she is not trained to conduct domestic business. <br /> <br /> By the ballad's end it becomes clear that the Dandy Wife was savvier in managing a marriage than her husband was. For not only does her superior intellect help her carve out a more satisfying role but she also has physical knowledge that predates him: "The day that I was married I thought I'd got a charming maid But I was much deceived.For scarce five months we'd married been When she had a darling son. The first part of the ledger begins on April 15 1840 and goes to Feb. 26 1858 in Salem N.J. The next page is headed "Philadelphia July 16 1859." The Philadelphia entries run through March 1860. The next page is headed "The Regular Book of Entries Belonging to David S. Darmon" and starts with April 11 1865 in Salem N.J. This suggests that the business had been taken over by David Smith Darmon one of the sons of David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 the latter generally known as Smith Darmon. This section runs to April 1875. The next section begins in Salem in Feb. 1889 but does not identify the person who "Commenced business this date." It runs to the beginning of 1892. The final section contains entries from the 1870s. David Smith Darmon 1815-1879 worked with leather as well as renting out horses and carriages. The entries run from making 16 handles for fire buckets for the Union fire Co. to hiring out a horse and sulky. A rare record of a mid-19th-century New Jersey business. In Good Condition: lacking leather from spine; front board is detached but present; back board is almost detached; front free endpaper is detached with loss from lower section without loss of writing; otherwise the pages are solid with occasional soiling or fading. hardcover

Embossed Dickinson College Library stamp on title page. Mary Paley Marshall 1850-1944 was part of the first class of 5 women at Cambridge's Newnham College in 1871. She taught economics at Newnham and was asked to write a book based on her lectures. Her husband Alfred Marshall also contributed to The Economics of Industry before publication. It was popular and reprinted many times. When his larger work The Principles of Economy first appeared in 1890 he opposed any further printings of The Economics of Industry indicating that this was presumably the final printing. Extremely scarce. In Very Good Condition: cover is rubbed; call number written in white and black at tail of spine; back free endpaper scraped; a few minor pencil marks; otherwise clean and solid. 18212605<p>London: The Pamphleteer A.J. Valpy 1821. <br /><br />Scarce pamphlet featuring five letters by Jean Baptiste Say in response to "Principles of Political Economy" by Robert Thomas Malthus. Say 1767-1832 was a giant in free-market economics and wrote these letters criticizing the economic views of Malthus 1766-1834 whose "Principles of Political Economy" appeared in 1820.</p><p>Malthus of course was probably better known for his controversial earlier work "An Essay on the Principles of Population" in which he predicted that population growth would outstrip global food production leading to mass starvation and death. <br /><br />In terms of economics their disagreements centered on the causes of depressions. Both men wrote in the wake of the depression and high unemployment that followed the Napoleonic Wars hence the reference to "general stagnation of commerce" in the title of Say's collection of letters. Malthus believed that depressions were caused by general overproduction of goods while Say thought general gluts were impossible arguing that supply creates its own demand "Say's Law" as it's known to economists. <br /><br />This pamphlet was removed from a bound volume of "The Pamphleteer" a collection of pamphlets and speeches regularly issued by London printer and publisher A.J. Valpy. This piece was published in Vol. 17 No. 34 in 1821 one year following the publication of Malthus's book. <br /><br />The text of this pamphlet appeared as part of a longer work by Say "Letters to Mr. Malthus and A Catechism of Political Economy" issued in 1821 by Sherwood Neely and Jones of London. Chez Bossange in Paris issued the original French edition in 1820.<br /><br />This pamphlet is scarce in both the antiquarian book trade and in institututional holdings. 1807W1010<p>Octoraro Pennsylvania: Francis Bailey 1807. viii 364 pages 25 plates some folding. 8vo. Oliver Evans was largely responsible for early automation in the American milling industry. Among those licensed to use his patented devices was George Washington and many of the mills built in the early 19th century were based on Evans' designs. Part five of the book and its accompanying plates are by Thomas Ellicott whose family were the largest flour mill owners in Maryland. Preceded only by the now rare 1795 first edition this second edition was printed by Lancaster County printer Francis Bailey who is best known for the printing of the first complete official edition of the Articles of Confederation. Second edition of the book described by William Reese as "the first American book on mills and milling machines and a landmark of early American technology" Federal Hundred #50. Recently and sympathetically rebound in full brown leather with the original title patch retained. Pages are lightly tanned; some off-setting from the plates--still a clean tight attractive copy.
