2005014710CN The Hague: Kluwer Law International 2005. Second Edition. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book Among restrictions on imports safeguard measures are particularly controversial in that they are invoked in the absence of any unfair trade practice. Safeguards interfere substantially with the normal stream of trade and their improper application undermines the objectives of the WTO. Recent WTO cases have brought the attention of trade lawyers to the absence of comprehensive materials on this complex subject and highlighted the need for a reliable guide to the WTO rules on safeguards. Dr. Y.S. Lee perhaps the world's foremost authority on safeguard measures has provided such a guide here updated in its second edition. Readers may expect from this book comprehensive coverage on safeguards to date with legal analysis of the important issues in the interpretation and application of the current rules on safeguards. The author also proposes modifications to enhance and clarify the discipline of safeguards. The crucial issues raised include the following: economic and political justifications of safeguards; applicability of GATT Article XIX; interpretation and application of the Agreement on Safeguards including nondiscriminatory application of safeguards and justification of safeguards-in-response; transitional product-specific safeguard measures against China; and emergency safeguards to trade in services. The focus of the book is on the WTO Agreement on Safeguards as interpreted by WTO Panel and Appellate Body reports in key cases including Korea' Dairy Products Argentina's Footwear United States' Wheat Glutten United States' Lamb Meat Chile's Price Band System United States' Line Pipe and United States' Steel Products. Dr. Lee summarizes the various key findings and provides lucid and well-balanced analysis of these reports. "Safeguard Measures in World Trade" comes at a time when safeguard measures continue to mount in various parts of the world and a possible domino effect can destabilize the international trading system. It will be of inestimable value to government officials trade lawyers international business people and academics in trade law and related fields. 265pp. Kluwer Law International hardcover
2000015448CN The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers 2000. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Like New/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book This volume maps out the response of states to human rights violations over the period 1946-1999 and offers a complete record for this period. Its starting point is that such responses are not established and accepted state practice. Traditional if unwritten norms of states' behaviour developed through centuries of silence and inaction; the prevalent reaction to human rights violations by another state remains the absence of any response. Furthermore this book probes into evidence of active and passive complicity by reviewing aid to countries in which violations have been taking place and diplomatic initiatives undertaken to shield violators from public opprobrium. Since international law is generated through state practice the book highlights the ongoing tussle between the pre-1946 heritage of silence and inaction and the 1946-1999 haphazard pattern of responses to violations. 420pp. Martinus Nijhoff Publishers hardcover

1727000369Mantua: Alberto Turnermani 1727. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. 4to. pp. xxii 2 260 i.e. 272 2 261-338. Pagination is erratic repeating 161-172 in numbering. With 6 plates including a frontispiece depicting the dedicatee Victor Amedeus II Duke of Savoy; a fold-out illustrating the Roman triumphal arch at Susa outside of Turin with a restored inscription; 3 fold-outs reproducing Roman papyri manuscripts; 1 plate depicting Roman coins. An illustration on p. 236 accompanies the text showing a winged Roman or Etruscan spirit. The title page is printed in red and black and includes an engraved vignette. Text is in Italian with Latin sections. Bound in full contemporary mottled calf showing rubbing staining and general wear. Hinges and head caps are carefully restored; board corners are repaired. Several gilt panel lines on the spine are renewed with new gold somewhat brighter than the old. Interior pages are generally crisp and fresh. Occasional scholarly Latin marginalia are written as glosses in a very neat miniscule old hand 19th cent. or earlier sometimes easy at first glance to confuse with the regular printed glosses. A small marginal tear on p. 93 is neatly sealed. A minor tear near the hinge of the triumphal arch plate is also sealed. Scipione Maffeis "Istoria diplomatica" is a landmark book in the history of paleography. This work firmly established the unity of the Latin script and disproved Jean Mabillions earlier theory that Latin upper case lower case and cursive characters derived from five different early alphabets. Maffeis book also analyzes the Ravenna papyri a collection of late Roman administrative documents from the chancery of the Archdiocese of Ravenna dating from the 5th-7th centuries c.e. many of which are here transcribed and published for the first time. Other documents are also mentioned including the famous bronze tablet "Senatus Consultum" prohibiting the celebration of the Bacchanalia. Another section discusses the origin of the Etruscan and Italic alphabet. 1998015021London: Kluwer Academic Publishers 1998. Seventh Edition. Cloth/Laminated Boards. Very Good/No d/j as Published. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Type: Book The growing influence of the major international economic organizations on members and non-members alike makes it imperative that the rules and functions of these organizations be fully understood. This work is designed to meet the need for a late 1990s concise treatment of significant international economic institutions and agreements. The first part of the book is devoted to world organizations or conventions: the International Monetary Fund the World Bank Group the World Trade Organization the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The second part covers regional organizations: the early experiments in European integration the European Community and the North American Free-Trade Agreement. In this book Professor van Meerhaeghe also provides a critical comment on the activities of these institutions. For example he casts doubt on the usefulness of several institutions and questions the craving for power of the European Commission. This seventh edition of the text been extensively revised and brought up to date. The former long chapter on the Economic Community has been split up into three chapters on customs union economic union and monetary union respectively. A chapter on NAFTA has been added. Due to their reduced Benelux EFTA or only historical Comecon significance the core only of these former chapters has been kept. 368pp.N.B.Slight marking to base of spine.
