ABOUT THE BOOK:- CRISSCROSSING PATHS is a saga of four families or people as they grieve, rejoice, say goodbye and reunite over the course of approximately one hundred years. It starts on the first day of the WWI Battle of the Somme. After the armistice the story goes southward to the Himalayan foothill station of Dharamsala where a Captain Elliot retreats to recover from haunting memories of things he had seen and done during the war. From India the book carries on to the peacefulness of Canada in the 1920s and 30s; then to WWII in occupied Europe, and in the Malaya Peninsula and Burma. The independence of India and creation of Pakistan for Muslims is addressed along with the choice made by a Muslim man of the earlier chapters in Dharamsala. Part II follows the life of one main character through his childhood and youth until he goes to sea on a Canadian warship. The experiences he had are mostly funny, but on one occasion extremely sad. The second last reunion of the book seems to be created by a miracle, but for those who truly believe in God Almighty above it wasn't. The book ends with the grandsons of Captain Elliot venturing to Dharamsala to observe what Walter Elliot had once told their father, Charles Elliot, about the place. About the Book:- Ogburn has treated social change quite differently from recent contributors to this field Toynbee, Sorokin, and Brook Adams. He explains cultural change or evolution by four major concepts: invention, accumulation diffusion and adjustment. Implicit in this notion is the criticism of the error committed by the classical evolutionists in anthropology and sociology when they sought to explain social evolution by employing Darwinian concepts of variation, natural selection, and heredity Orburn recognizes cultural reality as distinct from biological reality. He treats culture growth in the macrocosm, concerning himself “with the larger aspect of the problem.” About the Author:- William Fielding Ogburn (June 29, 1886 – April 27, 1959) was an American sociologist who was born in Butler, Georgia and died in Tallahassee, Florida. He was also a statistician and an educator. Ogburn received his B.A. degree from Mercer University and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. He was a professor of sociology at Columbia from 1919 until 1927, when he became chair of the Sociology Department at the University of Chicago. He served as the president of American Sociological Society in 1929. He was the editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association from 1920 to 1926. In 1931, he was elected as the president of American Statistical Association, which also elected him as a Fellow in 1920. He was also known for his idea of "culture lag" in society's adjustment to technological and other changes. This concept is mentioned in the book Future Shock, by Alvin Toffler. He played a pivotal role in producing the groundbreaking Recent Social Trends during his research directorship of President Herbert Hoover's Committee on Social Trends from 1930 to 1933. He was one of the most prolific sociologists of his time, with 175 articles under his name.
