The history of Turkish people in Britain is not as short as many would presume but is quite under researched. There is some research on the history of Turks in Britain but still many people do not know that 'Güvercinlik' (pigeon-loft) is the term given by the first Turkish arrivals to Trafalgar Square, London. It is where the first Turks (mainly Turkish Cypriots) used to meet. This was their one and only meeting point out of necessity as they did not have any associations, cafes or restaurants of their own to gather and socialise. Although it is known that some Turkish Cypriots arrived in London in the 1920's and 1930's Turkish Cypriots started coming in bigger numbers to London in the 1940's and 'Güvercinlik' is the place where their journey started.

This book is the fruit of a workshop which we organized in Istanbul in October 1996. We wished to examine Turkish Muslim views of Europe since 1980 and the situation of Turkish Muslim migrants in Germany. So we decided to invite some Turkish researchers and scholars on a private basis and ask them to present their work and experience as far as it touched on the subject and to engage in discussion on their papers. The book has three prominent themes. The first is the emergence of new orientations on all sides towards Muslims and Europeans living together at the present time, and possibly coming to practical cooperation and dialogue. The second is Turkish Muslim self-understanding and views of Europe, as far as they are expressed in intellectual terms. The third is the ways in which Turkish Muslim life in the European diaspora is organized. It will be clear that these three themes are interrelated and consequently the three parts of the book are not independent of each other.

brossura Nei prossimi anni non esisterà più il turismo così come lo abbiamo conosciuto finora. L'autore parte da questa affermazione per sviluppare da un lato un'accurata analisi teorica e proporre dall'altro soluzioni concrete e utili ad amministratori, imprenditori, ricercatori. Il turismo nelle sue rigide definizioni non è più realistico per una società postmoderna, che ha fatto della mobilità e del nomadismo la sua essenza e la sua capacità di comunicazione. Nel volume è turista ogni essere umano transumante visitatore, migrante e perditempo - spinto dall'estro del consumista o dall'operosità del produttore. Il territorio, nella necessità di dare una risposta adeguata ai cambiamenti del mercato, riorganizza l'offerta spesso in modo più rapido di quanto le autorità preposte riescano a fare. La capacità di pensare un'offerta strutturata è ancora molto limitata: l'unica politica unitaria e coesa che viene applicata alla città perché possa sviluppare le sue capacità attrattive è quella degli eventi: piccoli, grandi, medi, ricorrenti, saltuari, alternati purché se ne parli, all'esterno della città ma soprattutto al suo interno. Il successo dell'evento è spesso soprattutto il successo di politiche che riescono a ricostruire la coscienza, la consapevolezza e l'orgoglio del territorio urbano. In questa dirczione sarebbe opportuno sviluppare altre e ancor più efficaci politiche del territorio.
br. Se si è passati in poco tempo dall'uso del mondo all'usura del mondo, è perché la massificazione del desiderio turistico, camuffata da libertà di movimento, è avvenuta all'interno di una logica industriale che ha distrutto la dimensione simbolica del viaggio, trasformandolo in una «fuga d'evasione» da fare in tempi e luoghi deputati, e soprattutto passando sempre alla cassa. Ponendosi al servizio del consumo mondiale, il turismo è diventato, insieme alla televisione, agli antidepressivi e al calcio, uno dei più potenti anestetici che la società contemporanea elargisce ai suoi logorati cittadini, immersi in una ipermobilità che dà la misura della loro insoddisfazione. Eppure, nonostante la standardizzazione dei desideri e il saccheggio ambientale, il turismo mantiene intatto il suo potere incantatore. Forse perché il turista, lontano dal suo territorio originario, che ormai non conosce più, nutre la confusa speranza di trovare altrove ciò che gli manca a casa: una vita conviviale in un territorio ancora carico di senso. Senza accorgersi però che con la sua stessa presenza distrugge ciò che è venuto a cercare. Prefazione di Paolo Cognetti.
