541 pages including index. Copyright 1949. Tells the story of Canada's development in a way that will permit every Canadian reader to *feel* the high adventure that is experienced by all who further and strengthen their country's nationhood. Because citizenship is essentially the practical application of our democratic principles, it should be studied as an integral part of our history, and is so presented here. For this reason too, a constant effort has been made to weave into the story of our nation an understanding of British political institutions which have served as the greatest single unifying force in our history. Very Minor shelfwear. Laminated cover. ; 2002 Oxford reprint of 1985 Edition ; Oxford Historical Monographs; 1.1 x 8.84 x 5.9 Inches; 300 pages; European history from 1480 to 1570 was a period of turbulent change, political upheaval, profound moral questioning, and urgent philosophical speculation. This book explores the intriguing role of the almost-forgotten Congregation of Benedictine monks of Italy and southern France in the events of these tumultuous years. From archival and published records, the picture emerges of a closely-knit order of humanist scholars whose religious and philosophical studies later put them in a unique position to understand the Reformers. The book also casts light on the monks' fascinating reaction to the Reformation, as they poured out a stream of academic books, tracts, sermons, and poems in their attempt to heal the deepening rift between Rome and the Reformers. Critized and misunderstood by all sides, the Congregation gradually fell into decline until it was finally suppressed under the Napoleanic invasions.

"At the time when I undertook to write this book, the defence policies of Canada were a matter of greater public interest than perhaps at any previous period in time of peace since the Dominion came into existence in 1867. Today, with the country involved in a new Great War and that war in a critical stage, they command still more attention. This volume is presented as a possible contribution to public information and discussion on the subject... Intended to provide an outline of the history of Canadian defence policy, with emphasis upon the most recent period." - from Author's Preface. Chapters include: Geography and Canadian Security; The Military Institutions of an Unmilitary People - Canadian Defence Policy to 1914; The Great War and After 1914-1935; The New Defence Policy 1935-1939; The Second World War. Appendices include: The Hudson Bay Route; The Militia Reforms after 1989; Defence Expenditure 1929-1939; plus notes. Some yellowing to contents. Moderate wear to navy cloth-covered boards. Map endpapers. Unmarked. Nice copy. Book
334 pages including index. "The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "technetronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems. Part 1 describes the impact of the scientific revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminators, the US. Part 2 examines how this has effected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. Part 3 assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. Part 4 focuses upon the US, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition - as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. Part 5 outlines in broad terms the general direction the US might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas." - from dust jacket (not included). "This is one of the most original books on political and social thought to appear in recent years. The author projects the impact of technology and electronics on the political and social values of the United States, the Soviet Union and other 'post-industrial' states. As a study of global society in transition, this seminal work is bound to elicit major controversy and will be difficult to ignore." - Foreign Affairs. Bit of soiling to fore-edge else clean and unmarked with light wear. Light wear to dust jacket now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. A quality copy. Book
