389 pages. Index. Black and white illustrations. "This book attempts to provide answers to a number of questions: why did Guelph grow and develop when other centres such as Rockwood and Hespeler remained much smaller? Why, on the other hand, given the strenuous efforts of the business community to promote Guelph's growth, did it never achieve the size and dominant position to which its leaders aspired? What were the ideologies, strategies, and consequences of growth and the failure of dominance? Finally, what were the periods and nature of the development of Guelph's major social institutions and organizations. In a word, what I have tried to achieve is an outline of Guelph's development upon which other historians could build a broader and more refined understanding of Guelph's social history." - from Preface. Book clean, bright and unmarked with light wear. Average wear to dust jacket which is partially sunned to spine. A quality copy. Book

Erin Mills New Town presents our company an opportunity to create, in cooperation with the public authorities, one of the most imaginative planned communities on the continent. It offers us an unparalleled opportunity to direct our resources to a sound business venture that will provide an urban environment in which a prime consideration is quality living for those who live and work there." - from Foreword by A.E.
